For around 70 years in the early 1300s, Avignon was the center of the Catholic world. Its skyline boasts a stunning urban landscape, featuring the Saint Bénezet Bridge (the famous Pont d’Avignon), the Ramparts, Petit Palais, Cathedral, and the walls of the Popes’ Palace, flanked by four imposing towers. Begin your visit at the Palais, then take a short drive to the wine country. Châteauneuf du Pape lies at the heart of a region rich in history, culture, and joie de vivre. This unique, magical place appears on a hill like an island rising from a sea of vines. At the summit, you’ll find the remnants of the ruined château – a wall, tower, and lower hall built by the popes in the 14th century as a summer residence to escape the heat of Avignon. It was the popes who planted the town’s first vineyards. In the afternoon, visit two different vineyards: Château Fortia and Château la Gardine. Here, you’ll be introduced to iconic wines where tradition is enhanced by modernism and excellence, complete with wine tasting.
