- Le Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau - After a scenic 1-hour drive through rice fields and brackish ponds, where the tour guide will share insights about the unique features of the Camargue, visitors will arrive at the stunning Bird Park of Pont de Gau (admission ticket included). Established by a family passionate about nature in 1949, the Bird Park is nestled in the heart of the Camargue regional nature park, known as the Rhône river delta. This is the perfect spot to observe the region’s iconic birds. A leisurely walk along marshes and ponds, following a clearly marked footpath, allows visitors to get up close to pink flamingos, which share this habitat with hundreds of other bird species.
- Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer - The Camargue is rich in traditions and history. Rejoin the driver and head to the delightful coastal town of Saintes Maries de la Mer. Discover the legend behind the construction of the impressive fortified church Our Lady from the Sea, renowned in France for the celebrations held for each Mary’s feast in May and October. The May feast attracts many Roma Catholics to the town for a week to honor the relics of Sarah, their patron saint. Be sure to visit the church’s interiors, dating back to the early 11th century, and enjoy a panoramic view from the sentry walk on the roof (4€/adult). Afterwards, head to the beach for a relaxing stroll along the promenade, where reproductions of Van Gogh’s paintings are displayed, or take a swim in the Mediterranean Sea. Don’t miss tasting local specialties like seafood, bull meat, and rice (lunch not included).
- Bac du Sauvage - After lunch, meet the guide again to continue the journey through wild landscapes and charming farms, ranches, and salt marshes. The tour guide will pause along the way to observe and photograph Camargue horses and bulls. These animals are integral to the region’s culture, where it’s common to encounter a bull race or a folklore event featuring horses.
- Aigues-Mortes - Before returning to Avignon, explore Aigues Mortes, a regional highlight, a beautifully preserved walled city dating back to the 13th century. Founded by King Louis IX in 1240 as a launching point for the Crusades, Aigues Mortes emerges from the salt pans and rice fields. Its massive ramparts enclose narrow cobblestone streets and quaint squares, perfect for shopping and sampling delicious local desserts. Visitors can also choose to walk on the sentry walk atop the rampart, offering the best views of the surrounding salt marshes.
