The day begins with a van tour ascending Monte Escuro to explore the protected Natural Reserve and Volcano of Lagoa do Fogo, pausing for photographs and to enjoy São Miguel’s stunning views of the island and its turquoise lake.

Descend the mountain heading north, passing by Caldeira Velha’s environmental center to learn about the volcanic origins of the islands, as well as their biodiversity, geodiversity, and geothermal resources.

Optionally, indulge in a thermal bath at Caldeira Velha’s hot springs, or continue to the invigorating cold waterfall of Salto do Cabrito, surrounded by pristine, lush green flora.

If time permits, further down the mountain, visit Ribeira Grande’s historical center and the 16th-century fountain at Largo de São Pedro, concluding at the northern Santa Barbara Beach.
