A Journey Through Time: The Black Forest and Beyond

The allure of the Black Forest has long captivated travelers with its dense woodlands, charming villages, and rich cultural heritage. As a former professor of European history, I was particularly drawn to the opportunity to explore this storied region by car, with the promise of visiting historical sites like Heidelberg Castle and Frauenalb Monastery. My wife and I embarked on this adventure with eager anticipation, ready to delve into the past while enjoying the natural beauty of Baden-Württemberg.

Our journey began in the spa town of Baden-Baden, one of the eleven “Great Spa Towns of Europe” recognized by UNESCO. Known for its elegant architecture and tranquil atmosphere, Baden-Baden offered a delightful start to our day. We strolled through its picturesque streets, admiring the blend of neoclassical and Belle Époque buildings that spoke of a bygone era of grandeur. Although the town’s commercial aspect was more pronounced than we expected, we found solace in a leisurely lunch at Amadeus on the plaza, savoring local flavors while watching the world go by.

Historical Marvels: Heidelberg and Frauenalb

Our next stop was the iconic Heidelberg Castle, a symbol of German romanticism perched high above the Neckar River. The castle’s red sandstone ruins, set against the lush greenery of the surrounding hills, were a sight to behold. As we wandered through its courtyards and gardens, I couldn’t help but reflect on the castle’s storied past, from its origins in the 13th century to its destruction during the Thirty Years’ War. The view from the castle’s terrace, overlooking the charming town of Heidelberg, was nothing short of breathtaking.
