- Elephant Cave - The origins of this cave are somewhat mysterious, but it is thought to have been constructed for spiritual meditation. According to folklore, it was created by the fingernail of the legendary giant Kebo Iwa. Based on its architectural style, the sanctuary likely dates back to the 11th century Bali Kingdom. The complex features both Hindu and Buddhist elements, including lingam and yoni symbols of Shiva, and an image of Ganesha, while the riverbank displays carved stupas and chattra, representing Buddhism. The temple is adorned with intimidating faces carved into the stone, believed to ward off evil spirits. The main figure was once thought to be an elephant, hence the nickname Elephant Cave. Other sources suggest it is named after the stone statue of the Hindu God Ganesh (with an elephant’s head) inside the temple. This site is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
