From Waves to Wildlife: A Surfer’s Journey in Bagaces
In search of a different kind of adventure, I traded my surfboard for a day with the big cats and waterfalls of Bagaces. Join me as I explore the Pumas Rescue Center and the hidden gem of Llanos del Cortes Waterfall.
A Day with the Big Cats
As a surfer, I’m always on the lookout for the next big wave, but this time, I decided to take a break from the ocean and dive into the wild heart of Costa Rica. My wife and I found ourselves in Bagaces, drawn by the whispers of a place where the elusive big cats of the jungle find refuge. The Pumas Rescue Center was our first stop, and it was a world away from the sun-drenched beaches we’re used to.
Our guide, Wilmar, picked us up from our hotel in Ocotal. His friendly demeanor and wealth of knowledge set the tone for the day. The Rescue Center isn’t your typical tourist trap; it’s a sanctuary for ocelots, jaguars, and other majestic felines. As we wandered through the center, we were captivated by the stories of each animal, many of whom had been rescued from dire situations. The center’s mission of conservation and rehabilitation was palpable, and it was refreshing to see a place focused on the well-being of its inhabitants rather than the spectacle.
Chasing Waterfalls
After our time with the big cats, we headed to the Llanos del Cortes Waterfall. This wasn’t the kind of place you’d find in a glossy travel brochure. Instead, it was a hidden gem, a 30-foot cascade tumbling into a serene pool surrounded by lush greenery. Local families were scattered around, enjoying the cool water and the warm sun, and we joined them, feeling like we’d stumbled upon a secret paradise.
The waterfall was a perfect spot to unwind, and we took our time swimming and lounging on the white sand. It was a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are the ones that aren’t rushed. The sound of the water, the laughter of children, and the rustle of the trees created a symphony that was both calming and invigorating.
A Taste of Local Flavor
As the day wound down, Wilmar took us to a local café near Liberia for lunch. The food was simple yet delicious, a testament to the rich flavors of Costa Rican cuisine. We savored every bite, reflecting on the day’s adventures and the unexpected joys of stepping off the beaten path.
This trip was a departure from my usual surf-centric escapades, but it was a reminder of the diverse beauty that Costa Rica has to offer. Whether you’re chasing waves or waterfalls, there’s always something new to discover. If you find yourself in Bagaces, I highly recommend checking out this experience. It’s a journey into the wild that you won’t soon forget.
