A walk through the thin, unmade lanes of Bagamoyo transports you to the mid-1800s, when the town was a significant hub on the East African coastline and the end point of the trade caravan trail connecting Lake Tanganyika to the seashore. Goods like slaves, ivory, salt, and copra were brought here to be transported to Zanzibar Island and other destinations. Many Western explorers, such as Richard Burton, Henry Morton Stanley, and David Livingstone, initiated and concluded their journeys in this location. In 1868, French missionaries founded Freedom Village in Bagamoyo as a sanctuary for freed slaves, and for the last part of the century it was a stopover for missionaries commuting from Zanzibar Island to the hinterland.
