From Waves to Peaks: A Surfer’s Mindful Journey in Bagmati Province
Trading the surfboard for hiking boots, I ventured into the heart of Bagmati Province for a mindfulness hike through Nagarjun-Sivapuri Park. Join me as I explore the lush landscapes, diverse birdlife, and breathtaking views of the Himalayan range.
A New Kind of Adventure
As a professional surfer, my life is usually dictated by the rhythm of the ocean, the ebb and flow of the tides, and the pursuit of the perfect wave. But every now and then, I find myself drawn to the mountains, where the air is crisp and the views are endless. This time, my journey took me to the heart of Bagmati Province, where I embarked on a Mindfulness Hike through the Nagarjun-Sivapuri Park.
The idea of a mindfulness hike intrigued me. It promised a day of birding and hiking through the lush landscapes of the Kathmandu Valley, with the added allure of spiritual sites and panoramic views of the Himalayan range. As someone who spends most of his time by the sea, the thought of exploring a different kind of natural beauty was too tempting to resist.
Immersed in Nature
The hike began early in the morning, as the first rays of sunlight filtered through the dense canopy of trees. The air was filled with the melodious calls of birds, a symphony that accompanied us throughout the day. Our guide, a local expert, led us through the trails of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, sharing insights about the diverse flora and fauna that call this place home.
I was particularly fascinated by the Spiny Babbler, Nepal’s only endemic bird, which we were fortunate enough to spot. The park is a haven for bird enthusiasts, with over 311 species of birds, including 117 migratory ones. As we walked, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the patience required in birdwatching and the patience needed to wait for the perfect wave. Both require a keen eye and a deep appreciation for nature’s wonders.
A Different Perspective
As we ascended higher, the views opened up, revealing a breathtaking panorama of the Kathmandu Valley below and the majestic Himalayan range to the north. It was a stark contrast to the endless horizon of the ocean, yet equally mesmerizing. The terraced fields, dotted with vibrant patches of green, painted a picture of harmony between man and nature.
The hike also offered a glimpse into the everyday lives of the locals, whose connection to the land is evident in their sustainable practices and deep respect for the environment. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving these natural spaces, much like the ocean waves I cherish.
By the end of the day, I felt a sense of peace and fulfillment, a different kind of high than the one I get from surfing. The mindfulness hike was a journey of discovery, not just of a new landscape, but of a new way of experiencing the world around me. It was a reminder that adventure can be found in the most unexpected places, and that sometimes, stepping away from the familiar can lead to the most rewarding experiences.
