Setting Sail to Exuma

The Bahamas have always been a place of wonder for me, a former professional surfer turned island-hopper. The allure of the Exuma Private Island adventure was too tempting to resist. As the sun rose over the Caribbean, I found myself boarding a sleek powerboat, ready to leave the hustle and bustle of Nassau behind. The journey to Exuma was a thrilling hour-long ride, with the wind in my hair and the ocean spray on my face. I quickly learned the importance of seat selection, as those with red jackets were in for a wetter experience. But for me, the ocean’s embrace was a welcome reminder of my surfing days.

Our first stop was Allens Cay, home to the endangered iguanas. Armed with grapes and sticks, I joined fellow adventurers in feeding these fascinating creatures. Watching them scurry out to greet us was a sight to behold, a reminder of the unique wildlife that calls these islands home. The staff, ever attentive, ensured we had everything we needed, making the experience both safe and enjoyable.

Island Adventures and Ocean Wonders

Next, we arrived at Ship Channel Cay, a private island that felt like a slice of paradise. Here, the real adventure began. Feeding stingrays and sharks was an exhilarating experience, one that brought me closer to the ocean life I cherish. The snorkeling was a highlight, and though it was my first time, the team, especially Jason, made sure I was comfortable and confident in the water. His extra briefing and mid-snorkel check-in were much appreciated, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the vibrant underwater world.

Lunch was a feast fit for island royalty, with a spread of fish, steak, potatoes, vegetables, salad, and hot dogs. The open bar was a delightful touch, offering a variety of drinks to enjoy as we lounged on the beach. The island’s restrooms and ample space ensured comfort, even with a crowd. It truly felt like a deserted island escape, a rare and beautiful experience.

A Taste of Island Life

As the day wound down, we were treated to a conch salad demonstration, a taste of the local cuisine that was as fresh as it was delicious. The surprise of the day was a group of young pigs swimming in the shallows, a hint of what the future holds for this island adventure. It seems that soon, visitors won’t need a separate trip to see the famous swimming pigs of the Bahamas.

Reflecting on the day, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the well-organized and exciting experience. While a few more loungers and a bit more historical context would enhance the trip, the adventure was nothing short of spectacular.
