- Palace of the Shirvanshahs - Built in the 15th century, the Shirvanshah Palace in Baku served the rulers of Shirvan after the capital moved from Shemakha to Baku. The complex includes the palace, tomb, mosque, divanhane, mausoleum of Sayyid Yahya Bakuvi, bath, eastern portal, and the gate of Murad (16th century). The main palace building, started in 1411 by Shirvanshah Sheikh Ibrahim I and continued by his son Khalilullah I, features a unique design with about fifty rooms connected by narrow spiral staircases. The ground floor, used by servants and for storage, remains as it was in the 15th century. The facade facing the front yard is more austere compared to other buildings. Near the palace is a mosque with an inscription under the minaret’s stalactite belt. The Divan-Khane, used for ambassador receptions and meetings, is one of Azerbaijan’s most beautiful architectural monuments. Declared a museum in 1964, the complex is a popular tourist site.
- Miniature Books - Located in the old city, the Museum of Miniature Books holds the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of miniature books. Created by Zarifa Salahova over 30 years, the museum opened on April 2, 2002, and features over 5,600 books from 66 countries. Entrance is free.
- Juma Mosque - Built on the ruins of ancient pagan buildings, the Juma Mosque in Icheri-sheher has been functioning since the 12th century. Funded by Baku philanthropist Khadja Shikhali Dadashev in 1899, the mosque was built on the site of a fire worshipers’ temple. The mosque’s conical dome, supported by four central pillars, is of special interest.
