Highlights
  • Gobustan Rock Art - Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape spans three sections of a rocky plateau emerging from the semi-desert of central Azerbaijan. It boasts an impressive collection of over 6,000 rock engravings that illustrate 40,000 years of rock art. The site also includes remnants of inhabited caves, settlements, and burial sites, showcasing extensive human activity from the Upper Paleolithic to the Middle Ages, during the wet period following the last Ice Age. Covering an area of 537 hectares, this site is part of the larger Gobustan Reservation.
  • Mud Volcanoes - Azerbaijan is home to the highest number of mud volcanoes in the world, with 350 out of the global 800 located within its borders. Locals refer to them as “yanardagh” (burning mountain), “pilpila” (terrace), “gaynacha” (boiling water), and “bozdag” (grey mountain), in addition to their geographical name, mud volcanoes.

Note: Due to the bumpy road leading to the “Mud Volcanoes,” you will be transferred to local taxis (the cost of which is included).

  • Yanardag State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve - Yanar Dag (Azerbaijani: Yanar Dağ, meaning “burning mountain”) is a natural gas fire that continuously burns on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula near Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital. Flames shoot up to 3 meters (9.8 ft) from a thin, porous sandstone layer. Yanar Dag is part of the Absheron District of Azerbaijan.

Unlike mud volcanoes, the Yanar Dag flame burns steadily due to a consistent seep of gas from underground. It is said that the flame was accidentally ignited by a shepherd in the 1950s. Unlike the nearby mud volcanoes of Lökbatan or Gobustan, Yanar Dag does not emit mud or liquid.

  • Ateshgah - Fire Temple - The Baku Ateshgah (from Persian: آتشگاه‎, Atashgāh, Azerbaijani: Atəşgah), also known as the “Fire Temple of Baku,” is a castle-like religious temple in Surakhani town, a suburb of Baku, Azerbaijan.

According to Persian inscriptions, the temple served as a place of worship for Hindus, Sikhs, and Zoroastrians. “Atash” (آتش) is the Persian word for fire. The pentagonal complex, featuring a courtyard surrounded by cells for monks and a central tetrapillar-altar, was constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was abandoned in the late 19th century, likely due to the decline of the Indian population in the area. The natural eternal flame extinguished in 1969 after nearly a century of petroleum and gas exploitation but is now lit by gas piped from the nearby city.

A tour full of information! - Our tour guide was Zach who was very informative, friendly and knowledgeable. His English was excellent and the whole group had a wonderful time. Mud volcanoes were the best part. We got picked up at 8.45am and back in the hotel at 16.30. Top tip: bring an umbrella, toilet paper and wear comfy shoes.

Superb performance from Tariq - What a wonderful trip. We thoroughly enjoyed the natural burning mountain and the mud volcanos in particular - although I wanted to go in but realised I would come out still the same colour!! We did extract some mud, which we hope to sell on the black market for a few sheets when we return back home. My wife had an amazing time at the restaurant. The first thing she did was find and use the toilet. Full marks here - she was able to utilise the facilities to work out at the same time as shedding her load - squatting over the hole in the ground to achieve a nice mound. She was also delighted with the food although she would have liked to use the facilities again at the restaurant before leaving. In fact - I would recommend international travellers fly out just to experience these amazing toilets! The whole day was a great experience and Tariq was extremely knowledgeable. I have to say we could not have had a better guide. Hats off to Tariq who looked after us throughout and gave us great information and knowledge. Tariq had a dream to go to the States - I can only wish him the best and hope we bump into you again one day and share some mud from those volcanos!

Excellent day tour of Gobustan and Absheron - I very much enjoyed the day tour of Gobustan and Absheron. The petroglyphs of Gobustan, the mud volcanoes, the Fire Temple and the continuously burning natural gas fire sites were amazing. Tour guide Zac was very knowledgeable and thorough in showing us all the sites. He was especially very good in explaining the emergence of various religions in Azerbaijan and the details related to the fire temple. The tour van and the lunch stop were very good. I highly recommend this tour.

Attractive Caucasia - Experiencing some of the natural curiosities of the interesting region. Fire mountains and mud volcanoes in such a small area, and the novel architecture that has been erected to make Baku a fascinating spot.
