ABOUT KHINALUG

By some definitions Xınalıq (2335m) is Europe’s highest village. Its upper half retains many ancient stone houses that form distinctively austere stepped terraces up a steep highland ridge. And the whole scene is often magically wrapped in spooky clouds that part sporadically to reveal 360-degree views of the surrounding Caucasus.

Apart from examining the one-room museum and gazing at the hypnotic views, the main attraction is meeting and staying with Xınalıq’s hardy shepherd folk who have their own language (Ketsh) and still live much of their lives on horseback. Bring warm clothes – nights can be icy cold.

A village in the clouds - This was a great experience. The road and the scenery were very dramatic; but best of all was the chance to see the village and the people and be guests in their home. A rare privilege, highly recommended.

Full data Khinalug and Candy Mountain tour - A long day trip (as expected). The scenery was varied and interesting. We travelled along the dry Caspian coastline to the Five Finger Mountain. Our next stop was the Candy Cane Mountains, a structure of layers of red and light grey mudstone. We then started to climb up into the mountains through wooded areas. As we increased in elevation the trees fell away to very steep open grassed hills and mountains. Most of this time we followed a river, sometimes driving through very steep walled valleys, only about 30 metres wide. We stopped a few times to take in the stunning scenery. We arrived at Khinalug, a quaint little village punched on the side of a mountain. We were welcomed into a local house and shared a delightful local lunch. Afterward we walked through the village before starting our trip back to Baku. Our guide, Servi, was very personable, helpful and was able to answer most of our questions. She provided an interesting commentary throughout the trip, while pointing out places of interest and facts about Baku and our trip.

Experiencing Guba and Khinalug - We booked a tour of Guba and Khinaliq with Tes Tour and saw some amazing views. Our guide Namig was a very friendly person who kept giving us information throughout the tour. We as a couple highly recommend Tes Tour for viewing these areas. You'll fall in love with the places!

Long day but memorable - It’s a long way for a short visit but the experience and scenery in the mountains made it worthwhile. Trip to candy cane wasn’t worth the journey but lunch at the village was nice. Unfortunately the bridge over the river near the village was down so we had a detour in an old jeep to cross the river that did not comply with any HSE standards, but, was memorable. Comfort breaks at the same cafe there and back were a scam, high prices and horrendous toilet facilities. Why? It’s a 12 hour trip in total, nice people in the group and with just 6 of us in the minivan it was comfortable.
