Highlights
  • Guba-Khachmaz Region - Travel to the northern capital of Azerbaijan, Guba. Upon arrival, visit the Jewish Settlement. Across the Kudyal River from Guba lies Red Town, the largest Mountain Jewish settlement in the former Soviet Union. Red Town is unique as the only entirely Jewish settlement outside of Israel and the United States, and it is the last surviving shtetl.

Mountain Jews have resided in the Caucasus for thousands of years, forming various communities and resettlements. They practice a distinct form of Judaism that blends the Old Testament with other traditional customs and a touch of mysticism. Their language, Judeo-Tat or Juhuri, belongs to the Persian language family. Historically, Jewish communities thrived in Persia, but after their settlements were destroyed by Nader Shah in the 18th century, many Jews sought new places to live.

  • State Historical, Architectural and Ethnographic Reserve Khinalig - Journey to Khinalig village, located 65 km from the center of Guba in one of Azerbaijan’s northern regions. This ancient mountain village is designated as a state historical-architectural and ethnographic reserve, often likened to an open-air museum. The village preserves its traditional lifestyle and unique architecture. The locals speak a distinctive language that attracts ethnologists from around the world. Tourists visit Khinalig to experience the hospitality of the locals and to admire the stunning mountain scenery under a vast, starry sky.

Visit Khinalig village. The village is located at an altitude of 2100-2200 meters above sea level. They say that this area is associated with Noah. According to legend, when Noah saw this tall and flat terrain, he dropped anchor and told everyone to leave the Ark. There are about 380 houses that are between 200-300 years old. Since the slopes here are very steep, the houses are built very close to each other. The roof of one house is the courtyard for the one located above. The locals are one of the Albanian tribes and they speak a completely original language.
