Highlights
  • Trunyan Cemetery - The locals in this village live a very traditional life that is vastly different from the rest of Bali. The Trunyanese do not cremate their dead. After a cleansing ritual, the dead body is placed in a bamboo cage, locally known as ancak saji, which is placed under the Taru Menyan tree. Taru Menyan means nice smelling tree and it emanates a scent that neutralizes the smell of rotting bodies. It is from this tree that the name Trunyan is derived. It is only the bodies of married people that are placed in bamboo cages.
  • Bayung Gede - Visit another ancient village called Bayung Gede, which is believed to be the parent of all of the ancient villages in Bali. Many people come here to see the hanging newborn placentas that are unique to Bayung Gede.
  • Kintamani Plateau - Stop at highland Kintamani to see the ancient Batur volcano and Lake
  • Kehen Temple - Visit Kehen Temple for the famous steps of heaven

Additional Information

Explore two of the oldest and most enigmatic villages on the island, and interface with a Bali priest or healer to gain insight on Bali Sekala and Niskala.

Your journey will commence at Truyan Village. The inhabitants of this village lead an extremely traditional lifestyle, significantly different than the rest of Bali. Unlike other communities, Trunyan people do not cremate their deceased. Following a purification rite, the corpse is placed in a bamboo cage, known locally as ‘ancak saji’, which is then set beneath the Taru Menyan tree. This tree, whose name translates to ‘nice smelling tree’, releases a fragrance that mitigates the odor of decomposition. It is this tree that gives Trunyan its name. Only married individuals are laid to rest in these bamboo cages.

Your expedition continues to the historic village of Bayung Gede, considered the origin of all ancient villages in Bali. Many are intrigued by the suspended newborn placentas, a distinct feature of Bayung Gede.

something different and interesting but very unusual - This tour is very interesting. It does not look like any other tours we did. Definitely, before the tour, I would recommend reading and researching the topic. If you are interested in local traditions and culture, If you are not scared about the topic of death, and if you like to see something that 99% of tourists would never see- then this tour is for you. I am sure that in 10-20 years these places will be prohibited for tourists to visit. So hurry up. Thanks to our tour guide Kadek, we understood much better many local traditions and beliefs. He told us very interesting stories. He is an excellent source of information not just a driver. In addition, at the end of the tour, we left our bag in the car and Kadek organized for us a taxi from Denpasar to bring the bag to Ubud. Thank you very much Kadek.
