Bhumibol Bridge I - We traverse the Chao Phraya River beneath this impressive bridge to reach the other side, leading us to Bangkok’s Green Lung.

Chao Phraya River - Like many urban rivers, the Chao Phraya’s history is deeply connected with the city it flows through. Early settlers chose the original site for its fertile land and abundant fish. After Ayutthaya fell to the Burmese, King Taksin established his new capital here on the western banks, now known as Thonburi. In 1782, King Rama I found the eastern banks more favorable, founding modern Bangkok and marking the occasion by constructing some of the world’s most enchanting temples. The canals fed by the river later gained fame, earning Bangkok the nickname ‘Venice of the East.’ Meanwhile, renowned Western authors like Maugham, Conrad, and Coward highlighted the Chao Phraya as one of their favorite spots in the Far East. We will cross this river twice by long-tail boat.

Lat Pho Park - This is the pier where we arrive at Bangkrachao, also known as the Green Lung of Bangkok.

บางกะเจ้า - Bang Krachao island is a green oasis nestled in the heart of Bangkok. This urban jungle is visible from the upper floors of many apartment buildings along Sukhumvit Road, Sathorn Road, and Narathiwat Road, yet it remains a hidden gem to most travelers.
Bang Krachao is not like the tropical paradises of Koh Lipe or Koh Kood. However, it is unique and remarkable in its own way.
Bang Krachao is a man-made island situated in the Chao Phraya River. Years ago, a canal was cut to allow cargo boats to shorten their journey along the river. Often referred to as the “Lung of Bangkok,” Bang Krachao is home to a vast number of trees that help absorb the city’s air pollution. Thousands of mangrove trees line the island’s perimeter, with even more jungle within.
In a rapidly developing city, Bang Krachao has managed to resist change. So, it’s best to visit before it’s too late!
- Wat Bang Nam Phueng Nok - While we don’t stop at every temple we pass, there are some sights worth pausing for that aren’t listed among the area’s “attractions.” We’ll stop at a local Hindu statue/temple, enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, and much more. Let us surprise you.
- Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park And Botanical Garden - Located in Bang Kachao Sub-District, Samut Prakan Province, this park and botanical garden spans over 200 Rai. It was established as a source of fresh air, a public park for relaxation and exercise, and a place for ecosystem education on plant and animal species both local and nearby. It serves as an oasis for city dwellers seeking to experience nature, local life, and escape Bangkok’s hustle and bustle.
The garden features beautifully arranged landscapes, including aquatic plants and local flora that thrive in brackish water, preserving the original agricultural garden that was once a fruit garden. Declared “the lungs of Bangkok” by the government, this Greenfield includes a wooden bridge for visitors to stroll through peaceful, shady areas, and a 7-meter high tower offering panoramic views of the area. Besides the botanical garden, the Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market, open every Saturday and Sunday, is also nearby (we visit this on our Weekend edition).
