Manavari Temple is a prominent Hindu temple situated in the town of Chilaw, Sri Lanka. This temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and is reputed to be the first temple in the world devoted to him. It serves as a vital pilgrimage destination for Hindus, attracting thousands of devotees annually.
Legend has it that Lord Rama, the hero of the Hindu epic Ramayana, journeyed to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita, who was kidnapped by the demon king Ravana. It is said that Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva at various locations across Sri Lanka, including Manavari Temple. It is believed that he installed a lingam, a sacred representation of Lord Shiva, at this temple, which remains there to this day.
The temple complex features several shrines dedicated to various deities, such as Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh, and Goddess Parvati. The main shrine, known as the Manavari Shrine, is thought to house the original lingam placed by Lord Rama. The shrine is beautifully adorned.
