Excellent Tour with Sam! - Highlights of Bangkok in a day with a personal guide = awesome experience! This was our first tour in Bangkok and it set the bar pretty high! Sam, our guide, was knowledgeable, kind, positive and an overall amazing individual. We learned a lot and the sights were amazing. Seeing all the busloads of people waiting in queues with other group tours made us appreciate how well thought out and executed this tour was, and are very grateful we came across this option! Thanks Sam, we loved everything!!

Our guide Nan was very engaging and informative on all the sites and life in Thailand. We learned so much! I would highly recommend this tour if you have limited time in Bangkok and want to see as much as possible!

Our whole family was able to immersed ourselves in Thai culture and was able to visit all of the tourist attractions Bangkok has to offer. Our Viator guide Guitar was very courteous, knowledgeable and professional. We highly recommend this Viator and Guitar as the tour guide.

Efficient tour with a few caveats - Overall this is a really efficient way to see some of the top sights in Bangkok. You'll be whisked to the front of many entrance and ticket lines and have an air conditioned car waiting for you after most of the stops. Ice cold water and chilled towels are a huge plus as is the convenient pick up and drop off from the hotel. If you don't want to deal at all with the hassle of maps, logistics, an itinerary or taxi haggling, then this is the tour for you. On our own in Bangkok for the first time, figuring out how to hit all those places in one day using public transport would have been a nightmare. The fact that the guide texted to confirm our tour the evening before and that he was waiting for us in the hotel lobby 10 minutes early was impressive. For us, boating on the back canals, feeding the cat fish, seeing Wat Arun and the reclining Buddha were fantastic. That said, a few caveats: the tour includes Chinatown as the first stop, but if you leave at 8 am there will be nothing at all to see. So advertising Chinatown as "included" felt like padding--we drove through empty streets and the guide advised us not to stop (we agreed). Another issue: the guide walked almost 20 paces ahead all the time, and we frequently lost him around corners and in crowds. Viator should be aware that Americans in small groups of 2-3 prefer to have the guide at their side the whole time. We would have appreciated being handed site brochures instead of having to go look for them each time by ourselves and for the guide to narrate what we were seeing as we walked along. When we tried to ask questions it was treated as an inconvenience and we were told to wait until "story time" to learn things. We found ourselves eavesdropping on other talk-and -walk tours so that we learn what we were seeing while we were actually seeing it. As it was, we came to dread our designated story time, because it involved being urged to sit down (always in a shady place, which was nice) but being lectured for 10 minutes at a time (too long for multiple sessions) and by a guide who insisted on standing over us, about 12 inches away the whole time. Again, viator should be aware that having American women sit inches away from a very sweaty male towering over them for 10 minutes at a time, crotch at eye level, isn't culturally sensitive and can be a turn off. Eventually we refused to sit for story time and also asked for shorter story time and the guide complied. We were led to a very small, very clean restaurant around lunch time with excellent food! We would have appreciated being told what was included in the prepaid lunch and told our guide would return in about half an hour. As it happened, we were just shown menus and the guide disappeared, leaving us to order and eat alone, unsure of what was expected next. When we expressed desire to buy hand fans we were lectured not to stop at just any stall but to follow the guide to the "best one" with the best value. The best one turned out to be the most overpriced one (charging 150 baht per fan, instead of the typical 40-60 we saw everywhere else) so it felt like a kickback for the guide was being orchestrated and we waited until later to get our fans. Lastly, it was weird to be asked to rate the guide and the tour while we were still on the tour itself. We didn't feel comfortable giving anything less than four or five stars for each question especially since we had to hand the paper back to the guide while we were still on the road back to the hotel. We recommend that viator find a more sensitive way to solicit feedback that doesn't put everyone on the spot in the moment. We doubt that travelers are able to be really honest under those conditions. Overall, we recommend this tour if you're sure to want to see every single one of the sites included in an extremely efficient manner, with a mostly solicitous guide who is concerned with his clients' comfort. It's by far one of the most expensive day tours in Bangkok, however, and we're not entirely sure that a cheaper one wouldn't be just as good. A guide who was a little more astute at reading the cultural room (at least for Americans), was willing to walk with the group and not far ahead, and communicated expectations and itinerary a little more clearly would have made this a five star experience.
