This early 13th century temple sits in the northwestern region of Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchay province, a mere 20km from Thailand’s border. It’s among the most expansive temple-city constructions commissioned by a Khmer ruler. Currently, the temple is in poor condition since it was neglected in terms of restoration throughout the 20th century. Its design mirrors that of Angkor Thom and similar edifices linked to Jayavarman VII. The external enclosure features bas-relief carvings that illustrate both wartime activities and everyday living, akin to the famous depictions at Bayon.
Visiting Banteay Chhmar may require some effort but don’t let that discourage you. With few tourists making the journey due to its secluded spot, your successful visit will grant you the enviable status of a true adventurer.
