Highlights
  • Banteay Chhmar - Thought to translate to ‘The Small Citadel’ or ‘Narrow Fortress’, Banteay Chhmar is the Angkorian period’s fourth-largest temple after Preah Khan, Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat. Considered as the country’s most important temple of the same era, the complex consists of a moat and reservoir set in a remote, lush and unspoilt setting. Although little is known about the temple, it is known that King Jayavarman VII commissioned it in the late twelfth and early thirteenth century and a shrine within the complex held the image of his Crown Prince.

Additional Information

Siem Reap’s outskirts brim with temple ruins often overlooked in favor of the famous landmarks of Angkor. These obscure ruins played a pivotal role in the evolution of the Khmer Empire. One such unnoticed ruin is Banteay Chhmar, tucked away in the far north-west corner of the erstwhile Angkor kingdom. Banteay Chhmar, located approximately 60 kilometres away from Serey Sophoan, was built during the rule of Jayavarman VII in the 12th/13th century. The central temple once housed an idol of Srindrakumaraputra (the Crown Prince), likely a son of Jayavarman VII.

Banteay Chmmar - I find it difficult to write a review about this trip. On the one hand, our Cambodian guide Soren and driver were very good. However, the cost that Viator takes for this trip is far too excessive. Over £300 for a day trip to drive up to BC and back is excessive. So I would recommend the guide/driver and visit but no way is it worth £300. This is exorbitant pricing - especially when you compare the Angkor complex visit which is only £50. Please reconsider your pricing, Viator.
