Kotagede is a collection of kampungs that once served as the palace area of Mataram Islam in the 16th century. When the Mataram palace relocated to Pleret, Kotagede transformed into an old residential area featuring Javanese architecture. Interestingly, the ownership status does not belong to the Sultanate. There is a concept known as “rukunan,” which describes a Javanese residential arrangement where homeowners agree to create a passageway through part of their house, connecting it to others, allowing access under certain conditions. Visitors can enjoy dinner in one of the houses within the rukunan. This Joglo house is owned by Joko Nugroho, the sixth descendant of the original owner.
