Sukamade Beach: A Journey into the Heart of Nature’s Wonders
Drawn by the promise of witnessing sea turtles in their natural habitat, I embarked on a journey to Sukamade Beach in Banyuwangi Regency. This ecotourism adventure offered a profound connection to nature and a reminder of the importance of conservation.
Journey to Sukamade: A Path Less Traveled
The allure of Sukamade Beach had been calling to me for quite some time. Nestled within the Meru Betiri National Park in Banyuwangi Regency, this ecotourism gem promised an intimate encounter with nature that I simply couldn’t resist. As someone who has spent years advocating for sustainable tourism, the opportunity to witness the nesting of sea turtles in their natural habitat was a dream come true.
The journey to Sukamade was an adventure in itself. Our trip began with a scenic drive through the lush landscapes of Banyuwangi, where we were greeted by the vibrant greenery of the Sungai Lembu Plantation. The road to Sukamade is not for the faint-hearted, requiring a switch to a 4WD jeep to navigate the rugged terrain and river crossings. Our driver, Mr. Andre, expertly maneuvered the vehicle, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the breathtaking surroundings. As we traversed the forest, we were fortunate to spot two species of large hornbills and a troop of silvered leaf monkeys, a testament to the rich biodiversity of the region.
A Night with the Turtles
Arriving at Sukamade Beach, we were welcomed by the simple yet charming conservation guesthouse. The accommodations were modest, but the warmth of the local hospitality more than made up for it. After a delicious meal of local dishes and fresh fruits, we set out for the highlight of our trip: observing the sea turtles.
Under the guidance of a passionate park ranger, we spent the night on the beach, witnessing the awe-inspiring sight of seven large Green turtles making their way to the shore to lay their eggs. The experience was nothing short of magical, as we sat under the brilliant night sky, feeling a profound connection to the natural world. The following morning, we had the privilege of releasing 15 two-day-old baby turtles into the sea, a moment that filled me with hope for the future of these incredible creatures.
Embracing Nature’s Majesty
Our journey back to Banyuwangi was equally enchanting. We made a stop at the De Djawatan Forest, where we were greeted by the sight of majestic trees that have stood for over 200 years. The forest, with its towering trunks and sprawling canopies, felt like stepping into a fairytale. It was a fitting end to a trip that had been a celebration of nature’s wonders.
Reflecting on my time at Sukamade, I am reminded of the importance of preserving these natural treasures for future generations. The experience reinforced my commitment to promoting eco-friendly travel and supporting local conservation efforts. For those seeking an adventure that is both thrilling and meaningful, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Sukamade Beach. It is a journey that will leave you with memories to cherish and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of our planet.
