Highlights
  • Monument al Llibre - Along the Modernism Route, we will trace the sinuous dream path that took Antoni Gaudí from his social concerns to a total absorption with the divine, until he finally became “the last great cathedral builder.”
We will talk about eclecticism and the end of modernism, the Crypt of Colony Güell and the Sagrada Família, utopian socialism, positivist materialism, the intellectual bourgeoisie, the Spanish Civil War, anarchism, beatification and deliquescent surfaces.
We will see the Antoni Tàpies Foundation and Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Montaner, Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch, some hidden Eixample courtyards and, of course, Casa Calvet, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà by Antoni Gaudí. We don’t go inside the buildings.

Excellent Overview of Barcelona's Architecture and Gaudi's Influence - My kids (ages 20 & 18) and I really enjoyed this very informative tour. Pia was an incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide who provides a lot of detail about the history of Barcelona and how that history impacted the city's layout and architectural design. My kids and I are definitely "city people" who enjoy wandering around looking at buildings, so this was just the right kind of tour for us. We also enjoyed talking with Pia after the tour was over!

Highly recommend! - Our group of 7 (2 adults, 5 teens) learned so much on this tour. Our guide was Rafa and he was extremely knowledgeable, kind, and engaging. We saw the buildings around us in an entirely new light after the tour. Thank you for a great experience!

Gaudi and more - This is a terrific tour. It really covers more than just Gaudi - we learned a lot! I was a little concerned about booking this tour, because they don't specify where the tour goes or whether they go inside any of the sights, and I was concerned about covering the same ground twice (we had already visited a few Gaudi sights on this trip). I didn't need to worry - the tour only goes into publicly accessible spaces, i.e. building lobbies, and the information provided was so in depth and well-presented, it was a beautiful compliment to our other experiences in Barcelona overall as well as specifically to Gaudi sites.

Learn about the buildings - This tour is certainly worth your time. Conducted by an actual architect, you can learn a lot about Gaudi and about Barcelona in just a few hours. What I learned opened my eyes the rest of the time we were in town.

Well worth the time - Well organized. Knowledgeable guide and a very pleasant walk in Barcelona. I enjoyed this tour as much as any we did while we were in Spain.

The Architecture Tour- Just Do It! - Carmen was amazing! Her tour covered so much of Barcelona's history which made the architecture come alive. Doing the tour early in our week's stay really put the rest of the city in context. And Carmen is so warm, approachable and friendly. One of our group is going to study Architecture as a graduate student, and she was thrilled with the tour. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Spain.

Pia was fantastic! - This was a lot more than just a Gaudi tour. We learned so much about the history of Barcelona (urban planning, architecture, government). Pia was fantastic! While I don't know any of the other guides, I highly recommend Pia for any tour.

Fascinating tour but more standing and being lectured to than connecting with the historical buildings on the tour - This tour is especially well-suited to engineers, architects, urban planners & historians. Our guide, Pía, was extremely knowledgeable and freely admitted that she “geeks out” on this tour. I learned a ton about the history of Barcelona, qualities of building materials, how arches allow much larger structures to be built, water & sanitation planning … but less about Gaudí than expected. A fascinating morning but I had hoped to see and learn more about the many modernist buildings in the neighborhood we toured.

Awful - not a tour, just a professor lecturing at you for a few hours in detail about the physics of arches - This was honestly a very disappointing experience. We were hoping for a true walking tour where we could learn some of the history behind Barcelona’s architecture. What we got instead was a university level lecture about architecture - including in depth diagrams drawn for us of esoteric topics including the physics of arches, brick layering, and sewers - given in weird parks and alleyways. We literally spent the first 45 minutes in a small park behind a Melia hotel that our guide (Pia) first derided for their business practices. Everyone on our tour was frustrated. She talked at us with diagrams and old pictures. She didn’t engage with us at all. I think we traveled a maximum or 3 square blocks in the 3+ hours we were together. We barely saw anything of value and left feeling very frustrated. There should be a disclaimer that this is designed for Architects and Structural Engineers. Not for people looking to explore a city, learn a bit of history, and have a good time.
