- The Circus - As you journey from the port into the city of Basseterre, you are immediately welcomed by the warmth of the island’s residents. Upon reaching the center of Basseterre, a striking green clock monument will surely catch your eye. This clock was erected in honor of Lord Thomas Berkeley, a former president of the General Legislative Council in the 1880s, after a fire destroyed the city during British rule in the 1800s and it was rebuilt. This historic monument features four clocks facing four streets, four water stands, and a seating area around the clock, hence the name “The Circus.” It resembles Piccadilly Square in London, which hosts the famous clock, “Big Ben.” In St. Kitts, under British rule, ours became known as “Little Ben.”
- Immaculate Conception Catholic Co-Cathedral - View the church built in 1856 and rebuilt between 1927 and 1928. This structure remains in good condition and is a historical architectural marvel, showcasing the artistic designs of its era.
- Bloody Point - Bloody Point derives its name from the massacre of the Kalinago Indians in the village of Challengers in the 1600s. The British settled close to the Indians, claiming it was to protect the area’s chickens. Chief Tegreman grew suspicious when Sir Thomas Warner, the first governor of St. Kitts, returned from England with African slaves and more settlers. The chief sought help from a neighboring island as he planned his attack but was betrayed by a woman. It is said the massacre was so intense that the river ran red with blood for days.
