A lovely walk in a thermal environment - An impressive thermal site away from the crowds when I visited. A relatively easy walk past steam vents, and lakes, in an almost othercwordly experience. There are 3 places along the walk that you can get a bus back to the top. I walked to the bottom lake over about 2 hours and there were plenty of stops for photographs.

Book your trip directly if you want to save. Using a booking service will cost you more. - We only did up to the crater due to time constraints. It was worth it! Be careful when you book. TripAdvisor charges you in USD and does not display the currency other than $. Since we are local it was easy to make an assumption that the currency is displaying the local currency but it is not making it a LOT more expensive than booking with the facility directly.

It was very beautiful! If... - It was very beautiful! If you’re a senior I recommend you purchase your ticket somewhere other than Viator. There was not the option when I booked but Viator did refund the $8 extra I had paid through them. Waimangu is the best value for money of all the Rotorua tourist spots.

Wounderful Waimangu - It’s been a good few years since we have been to Waimangu, still a lovely walk and the boat trip at the end well worth it. Wasn’t to busy and gentle down hill made it an easy walk.

Awesome volcanic features and natural forest - We absolutely loved the awesome scenery and steaming volcanic lakes and vents - fascinating and very photogenic. If we were to return we'd probably just walk slowly to the lake and bus back. We loved the informative boat trip but found the time allowed to get to the lake too short and the lack of a clearly marked main track was incredibly frustrating (mainly at the far end of the walk where there were several equally likely options). Other walkers had similar confusion with regard to the correct path. We had to rush the last part of the walk and this detracted from the experience. Also, there was no operating toilet in the park beyond the main building. There is no excuse for not at least having a portaloo near the lake for those who find 2 hours too long. The cafe was very welcome for a coffee and light lunch.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley is an exceptional experience - We enjoyed the self guided walk in Waimangu Volcanic valley and the cruise in the lake. I had no problems following the map and for the less fit or if you are late catching the cruise, there is the bus! Bus drivers are friendly n helpful.

Great nature and bad manners. - The walk and the sights were very good. Strangely and unexpectedly the staff present at the time back at the shop and restaurant were unfriendly and unpleasant. The place was closing up at 15:30 as they wished to sweep the floor. Staff members were obviously not schooled for hospitality and displayed a very bored and unsatisfied attitude.
