Additional Information

PLEASE NOTE THAT START TIMES FOR EACH WALK ARE DIFFERENT DUE TO THE TIDES, AND NOT ALWAYS AT 01:00am (as mentioned by tripadvisor)

The route across the sands at low tide is atmospheric, evoking the time of Saxon Kings and Celtic Priests. We are likely to see and hear Grey seals as they bask on the sands. You will hear stories dating back to Roman times and can begin to imagine early pilgrims making the crossing to pay their respects to St Aidan and St Cuthbert. Holy Island is a special place and the best way to approach it is across the sands - walking barefoot if you want to get the most from your experience!

The walk is one-way to the island, returning to the start point in my vehicle after we have spent some free time on Holy Island.

Location
Barn at Beal Restaurant & Campsite

A great morning - This was an amazing experience walking barefoot across the sands in the footsteps of the pilgrims to Holy Island. Ray is a great guide. He led us safely across at the right pace for the whole group. He is a fantastic story teller and filled us in on the history of the island. Thanks Ray!

A must do if you are visiting Northumberland - Highly recommend this trip across the sands to holy island. Barefoot like the pilgrims did it, with fantastic storytelling along the way. Ray our guide was brilliant, he pitched the day just right, great stories but plenty of time for our group to chat away to each other and to him and ask questions. Ray is really knowledgable but didn’t overwhelm us with facts and figures, he kept it really informal which made it really enjoyable. One we made our crossing, we had an hour or so on the island itself to explore and were pointed in the right direction to the good cafes and gift shops before heading back before the tide came in. Would highly recommend this trip, suitable for children and adults alike.

Would put this on the list of things to do! - What an beautiful day out walking the pilgrims route across to Holy Island. Ray was such a great guide.....his knowledge and story telling was awesome. I have visited the island many times in the past but learnt so much from Ray during the walk. Would certainly recommend either doing this as a solo trip or gathering a group of friends together to do this.

Pilgrims’ path to Holy islands across tidal sands with Ray - Had a fabulous day as a group of 7 with this walk to the Holy islands across the tidal sands. Met Ray at the Barns of Beal cafe and had a short walk from there to the causeway. Walked a short way down the causeway then moved onto the sands. Ray kept us moving at an easy pace with guidance on areas of sand/silt to avoid. We stopped a number of times to hear the history of Northumbria and the Holy islands from Ray. He was extremely knowledgeable in the subject and told the story with humour. Once on the island we had just enough time to have a wander around the village, grab a much needed ice cream before being transferred back the the starting point by Ray via the causeway.

Ray was extremely knowledgeable, full of fascinating facts, and very happy to tailor our trip to suit the participants. Would love to return in the summer to walk it barefoot, but wellies were required in the icy weather this time!
