Exploring the Timeless Beauty of Úbeda and Baeza with Kids
Eager to explore the monumental cities of Úbeda and Baeza, I embarked on a family-friendly adventure from Granada. Join me as I share our journey through history, culture, and culinary delights.
Discovering the Charms of Úbeda
Our journey began with a scenic drive from Granada, where the rolling hills were adorned with endless rows of olive trees. As we approached Úbeda, the anticipation grew, knowing we were about to explore a city recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The kids were excited, and I was eager to see how this historic city would capture their imaginations.
Our first stop was the Plaza Vazquez de Molina, a square that seemed to transport us back in time. The grandeur of the Palace del Dean Ortega and the Palacio Juan Vazquez de Molina was awe-inspiring. The kids were fascinated by the stories our guide shared about the history and architecture of these buildings. It was a perfect blend of education and adventure, something I always strive for in our family travels.
The highlight for the children was undoubtedly the visit to Alfar Pablo Tito, a renowned pottery workshop. Watching the artisans at work and seeing the beautiful pottery pieces was a hands-on experience that sparked their creativity. It was a reminder of how travel can be a powerful tool for learning and inspiration.
A Taste of Baeza
After a delightful morning in Úbeda, we headed to Baeza, another gem of a city with its own unique charm. The Plaza del Populo greeted us with its stunning architecture, and the kids were thrilled to spot the Lions’ Fountain and the Old Butchers. Our guide’s stories about the city’s past brought the history to life, making it an engaging experience for the whole family.
We took a leisurely stroll through the Plaza de Santa María, where the majestic Cathedral de Baeza stood. The kids were particularly intrigued by the tales of the Corpus Christi Processional Custody, a masterpiece of Spanish goldsmithing. It was a moment of wonder and curiosity, as they tried to imagine the grandeur of the past.
Lunch was a delightful affair, with the opportunity to taste the famous tapas of the region. The kids enjoyed trying new flavors, and it was a great way to introduce them to the culinary traditions of Spain. The relaxed atmosphere of the local eateries made it a perfect family-friendly dining experience.
A Journey Through Time
Our day concluded with a visit to the Antigua Universidad de Baeza, where the legendary poet Antonio Machado once taught. Standing in the very classroom where he inspired countless students was a humbling experience. It was a chance to reflect on the power of education and the impact of great teachers, something that resonated deeply with my background as a former schoolteacher.
Before heading back to Granada, we made a stop at the AOVE Boutique to taste some of the finest olive oils in the world. The kids were surprisingly interested in the different flavors and the process of olive oil production. It was a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and learning.
The Úbeda and Baeza Tour was a perfect blend of history, culture, and family-friendly activities. It offered a unique opportunity to explore two of Spain’s most monumental cities in a way that was engaging for both adults and children. As we drove back to Granada, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the memories we had created and the lessons we had learned together.
