Tiananmen Square (Tiananmen Guangchang) - Located in the heart of Beijing, Tian’anmen Square is the largest city square globally, named after the Tiananmen (meaning Gate of Heavenly Peace) to its north, which separates it from the Forbidden City. It holds significant cultural importance as the site of numerous pivotal events in Chinese history. As the world’s largest city square and a lasting emblem of China’s national pride, it is encircled by many grand structures, including the Heavenly Gate (entrance to the Forbidden City), museums, government buildings, and Chairman Mao’s Mausoleum.
Forbidden City-The Palace Museum - Situated in the center of Beijing, the Forbidden City was the residence of 24 emperors during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. It is the largest and most well-preserved ancient imperial architectural complex worldwide, featuring expansive squares, halls, and gates, alongside intricate halls, gardens, courtyards, and living quarters. The exhibitions, both permanent and temporary, are invaluable treasures of ancient China. Visitors will walk for approximately 1.5-2 hours (2 kilometers). The walks in the Forbidden City are considered moderately challenging.
Mutianyu Great Wall - The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is highly rated on TripAdvisor for its stunning scenery, family-friendly environment, and beautifully restored architecture. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Beijing.
To optimize your time, it is recommended to choose a round-trip cable car to ascend and descend the Great Wall. The cable car is not included.
At the Wall, there will be free time to appreciate the breathtaking scenery, and the guide will provide background information about the Great Wall. The cable car ascends to and descends from the 14th watchtower. It is recommended to hike the most scenic part of the Great Wall – between the 14th and 23rd watchtowers, known to hikers as “the Golden Route.” However, the chairlift ascends to the 6th watchtower, and the toboggan descends from tower 6 as well. Hiking from the 6th to the 23rd watchtower may be challenging, but visitors can decide based on their physical condition.
Discover Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, and Dongjiaominxiang Hutong
Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) - The Summer Palace is the largest imperial royal garden in the world, constructed by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing dynasty as a birthday gift for his mother.
Visitors will witness the wisdom and treasures of traditional Chinese architectural art while strolling through this garden. Covering about 273 hectares, it comprises three main scenic areas: the palace area, lake area, and mountain area.
The Summer Palace visit includes a dragon boat ride on the lake, offering the best way to explore the Summer Palace (the boat trip is unavailable in winter as the lake freezes), and provides an opportunity to view all the beautiful palaces along the lake.
After the boat trip, visitors will walk along a long corridor, regarded as the longest art gallery in the world, featuring 14,000 traditional Chinese paintings on the beams.
Temple of Heaven - This site is where ancient Chinese emperors worshipped their “Gods.” The Altar, Echo Wall, and the impressive Imperial Vault are the highlights.
The Hall of Abstinence is a special place where emperors fasted before conducting ceremonies to pray for a good harvest, abstaining from meat and wine. Typically, the emperor would arrive three days in advance, refraining from drinking, entertainment, mourning, and ignoring any sins and crimes, demonstrating his devotion to his god.
