Highlights
  • Bell and Drum Towers - Enjoy a leisurely walk along Houhai Lakeside Hutong and the tobacco-shaped Hutong. Discover the local Beijing lifestyle in the Hutong community surrounding the city’s drum and bell towers.

In Beijing, Hutongs are narrow lanes created by rows of Siheyuan (Courtyard Houses), which are traditional courtyard homes. Many neighborhoods emerged by connecting one Siheyuan to another to form a Hutong, and then linking multiple Hutongs together. The term Hutong also refers to these neighborhoods.

Since the mid-20th century, numerous Beijing hutongs have been demolished to make way for new roads and buildings. However, in recent years, many hutongs have been designated as protected areas to preserve this element of Chinese cultural heritage. Hutongs were first established during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) and expanded during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties.

  • Hutong Tour - Immerse yourself in the local Hutong life of Beijing through a variety of community activities: take a rickshaw tour, visit Hutong families, join a dumpling-making class, learn Chinese calligraphy, watch a cricket fighting performance, or participate in a paper cutting class.
