- Liyuan Theatre - Since 1999, the Liyuan Theatre has been hosting classic Peking Opera performances in its grand opera hall, which can accommodate up to a thousand visitors. The hall enhances the atmosphere with design and decorations reminiscent of old Beijing opera theaters, including walls adorned with Chinese couplets and calligraphy, opera masks, and Chinese folding screens (pingfeng).
Peking opera features four main role types: sheng (gentlemen), dan (women), jing (rough men), and chou (clowns). Performing troupes typically include several of each type, along with numerous secondary and tertiary performers. With their elaborate and colorful costumes, performers are the sole focal points on Peking opera’s characteristically sparse stage. They employ skills in speech, song, dance, and combat through movements that are symbolic and suggestive rather than realistic. Above all, performers are judged by the beauty of their movements.
