The Forbidden City is split into two sections. The southern part, known as the Outer Court, was where the emperor wielded his supreme authority over the nation. The northern part, called the Inner Court, was where he resided with his royal family. The tour follows a south-to-north route.
- Temple of Heaven - The Temple of Heaven was used by emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties to conduct a memorial ceremony for the God during the Winter Solstice Festival and to pray for a good harvest in the first month of the lunar year. It is the largest existing structure in China dedicated to sacrifices to heaven. The buildings throughout the Temple of Heaven are rich with specific meanings and serve as a symbol of artistic expression in ancient China.
