In Beijing, Hutongs are narrow lanes created by rows of Siheyuan (Courtyard Houses), which are traditional courtyard homes. Since the mid-20th century, numerous Beijing hutongs have been demolished to make way for new roads and buildings. However, in recent years, many hutongs have been designated as protected areas to preserve this element of Chinese cultural heritage. Hutongs were first established during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) and expanded during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties.
