Trevvie On China Tour - My driver, Bruce, was prompt and very friendly and helpful plus very good English. Huanghuacheng was first stop for about 2hrs at the Wall. Nice views and a good section of the (Ming period) wall. Hills and lakes here. Not very busy. Then on to Mutianyou for another 2hrs at the wall. This was enough time for me as I only did the right-hand half of the Wall, as you enter. I also got the optional chairlift up to the Wall (I didn't want to spend energy getting there). Some parts are very steep but well worth the climb to the top. Not very busy. I did not have the energy to do the other half of the Wall. You would probably need another 1 to 1.5 hours there do do whole thing (about 3-4 hrs in total, depending on fitness). You can walk back down or get chairlift or (like me) take the toboggan run. That was fun. Less crowded than Badaling.

Great Trip to two sections of Great Wall - Our guide, Kevin, was professional and courteous from pick-up at the Conrad through dropping us back off at the hotel. He was informative yet allowed us to drive the conversation the entire trip. For the first section of the wall we went to a portion off the beaten path that was managed by the local community. Kevin navigated is the entire way and handled getting us up the wall. As this involved talking/paying two men standing at a fence at the base of the wall and then leading us up the hillside, climbing, stairs and a ladder, he was incredibly helpful. This section was far less touristy and exactly what we were looking for. He allowed us time to explore on the wall by ourselves. When we were done, he drove us to Mutianyu and assisted with purchasing our tickets and for the bobsled, touristy but fun. We set a time to meet back up at the base of the Wall and we were left to explore on our own. Kevin was an excellent guide. Open to conversation, yet not the least bit intrusive on our vacation experience.

I was picked up at my hotel promptly... -
I was picked up at my hotel promptly at the arranged time by Jenny. She drove our comfortable, clean Buick minivan safely through holiday weekend traffic. Her English skills were excellent and her positivity and advice at both sites were helpful. It should be noted that this particular tour is specifically engaging a driver to take you to the 2 sites.
Mutianyu arrival was nice and early before the huge throngs of travellers arrived. On our exit, we could see that long queues were forming.
Huanghuacheng was pleasantly bereft of the huge crowds. It is not rebuilt. There is no visitor's center. There is simply a well worn path leading along the reservoir then up to the wall. To get on top of the wall, a steep iron ladder must be climbed and a window entered in the watchtower. This is not for the faint of heart. Luckily, the half hour on the trail and the ladder climb result in a beautiful view from this rough section of the Wall.
After climbing back down, and sweating through all my garments, I was welcomed back into the Buick and conveyed back to my hotel.
This service was well worth the money. There is a convenience to spending the time you choose at each site rather than being on a bus schedule. Also, the friendly personal service of the driver is a real bonus. The day was thoroughly enjoyed.
