Additional Information

This is the go-to hike of the Great Wall surrounding Beijing, showcasing both undeveloped and renovated parts of the Wall at Simatai West and Jinshanling in just 3 hours. The journey to the Wall starts from the Kylin Tower in Simatai West, continuing westward towards Jinshanling. We will descend from the Wall at Shalingkou, Jinshanling, yet if you have the energy, you could hike an extra 30 minutes before descending at Zhuanduokou. The unrefurbished Wall with its watch and beacon towers winds east to west along the mountains. Enjoy the opportunity to make friends with local farmers, sample home-cooked local cuisine, and get an insight into local community life. It’s a photography enthusiast’s paradise along the Wall. As for the level of difficulty, the hike is moderately challenging and suitable for all ages.

  • Children must be accompanied by an adult
  • Children under 5 are not allowed to take this tour
  • Vegetarian option is available, please advise at time of booking if required
  • There is no toilet along the path on the Wall. There are toilets at the entrance of Simatai West and Jinshanling. Please prepare before hiking and always carry toilet paper by yourself.
  • Please don’t make any appointment after the trip as the return depending on the traffic between 5-6 pm.
  • You will be followed by local farmers when starting the hike. The farmers will give you help along the way, as a reward they will sell some souvenirs. If you don’t like this, you have to say NO firmly at the beginning (MAYBE LATER does not work in Chinese culture) or just ignore them and not speak a word with them; otherwise they can be persistent and follow you all the way on the Wall.
  • Unlimited bottled waters are stored in our car/van today, and you need a day pack to carry them.
  • We will bring trekking poles in our car/van and please tell your guide if you need one.
  • Travel insurance is optional and is the sole responsibility of travellers. It is encouraged to have coverage of injury or accident.
  • As responsible travelers, we “take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprint”.

Amazing hike with luis - Such an amazing way to experience the Great Wall. Luis was an amazing tour guide. We largely hard the wall to ourselves for majority of the hike and the views were phenomenal.

Incredible day out - This hike was fantastic. Travelled with my daughter and can honestly say this was one of the best days out that I could imagine. The hike was a little more demanding than impression from the site however with a small group we all moved as one. Our guide Vincent was really helpful and informative. This Great Wall experience I would recommend to anyone. Day I will never forget.

Step up, step down - Today I hit the wall. A section 2 hours out of Beijing with no tourists. It’s 6500 km long, took 10 million people 200 years to build. 1000 steps to get up to the wall and then 5 km hiking, more bloody steps. Truly amazing and more amazing that I survived the hike.

Best things to do !!! - This is amazing, my most favorite in China. It's one of the few places that you have by yourself and don't need to be surrounded by a million people. Do it with Oliver. He is incredible; you will learn the entire history of China through his stories and get to see the wall as it should be.

Unique and unrepeatable experience! - One of the best experiences of our trip to China. The Great Wall in Jinshanliang is one of the few authentic stretches that can be walked "with ease". Our escort, Michael, spoke excellent English and was very helpful. Typical lunch in a very good local "trattoria"! Driver to see again!

Excellent hike, beautiful views - Beautiful views, nice hike. Our guide Oliver made the hike even more interesting. It was a bit hot on an August end day - take a hat, sunscreen and bug spray.

Highly recommended trip with great tour guide - The trip was amazing. Our tour guide, Gary Lee picked us up downtown Beijing and a private car and took us to the Wall, about a 2 hour drive north of Beijing. It was only me and one other traveler on the tour so it was like having a private tour guide, Gary Lee was super knowledgeable about the region, the history and the construction of the wall so we both learned a lot as we traveled. I do have to say on this tour you must be prepared for some strenuous hiking, but the views and learning about the wall are well worth it . The section of the wall, Jimgshanling is not a tourist area whatsoever. Very few people did we encounter on our hike, which was wonderful. Highly recommended
