Additional Information
This is the go-to hike of the Great Wall surrounding Beijing, showcasing both undeveloped and renovated parts of the Wall at Simatai West and Jinshanling in just 3 hours. The journey to the Wall starts from the Kylin Tower in Simatai West, continuing westward towards Jinshanling. We will descend from the Wall at Shalingkou, Jinshanling, yet if you have the energy, you could hike an extra 30 minutes before descending at Zhuanduokou. The unrefurbished Wall with its watch and beacon towers winds east to west along the mountains. Enjoy the opportunity to make friends with local farmers, sample home-cooked local cuisine, and get an insight into local community life. It’s a photography enthusiast’s paradise along the Wall. As for the level of difficulty, the hike is moderately challenging and suitable for all ages.
- Children must be accompanied by an adult
- Children under 5 are not allowed to take this tour
- Vegetarian option is available, please advise at time of booking if required
- There is no toilet along the path on the Wall. There are toilets at the entrance of Simatai West and Jinshanling. Please prepare before hiking and always carry toilet paper by yourself.
- Please don’t make any appointment after the trip as the return depending on the traffic between 5-6 pm.
- You will be followed by local farmers when starting the hike. The farmers will give you help along the way, as a reward they will sell some souvenirs. If you don’t like this, you have to say NO firmly at the beginning (MAYBE LATER does not work in Chinese culture) or just ignore them and not speak a word with them; otherwise they can be persistent and follow you all the way on the Wall.
- Unlimited bottled waters are stored in our car/van today, and you need a day pack to carry them.
- We will bring trekking poles in our car/van and please tell your guide if you need one.
- Travel insurance is optional and is the sole responsibility of travellers. It is encouraged to have coverage of injury or accident.
- As responsible travelers, we “take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprint”.

Amazing trip with an excellent guide - Everything was perfect from the pick-up at our hotel, the hike and the lunch in a family owned restaurant. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about Chinese history. The walk can be quite steep, so bring good hiking shoes. There are not so many people at this part of the wall and the photo opportunities are excellent.

Amazing trip! - I spent an amazing day hiking the Wall! Our guide Oliver is very nice and competent, he explained a lot of things about China history and took us to a local restaurant where we had a wonderful lunch. My legs still hurt (so many steps!) but it was worth it!

A tremendous tour of the Great Wall - This was amazing. We were collected by Oliver, our guide, who came extra to our hotel to get us. Instead of minibus, we were upgraded to travelling in a Lincoln limousine. Oliver gave an excellent historical report on all the different dynasties of China and how each dynasty developed China. It was very a clear and interesting discussion. He told us a lot about The Great Wall and the different sections. We did this beautiful walk in about 3.5 hours. Oliver was a perfect guide. What an amazing structure. Here there are many sections still in their original state. We had a day where there were not many tourists at all. We were alone a lot of the time. We had a very tasty Chinese lunch after the walk. We were returned to our hotel by 6 pm. A perfect day. Thankyou so much to Oliver and driver and Gary, for organising this so well for us.

Hiking with kids! - My husband and I traveled with our two children- ages eight and eleven to the Great Wall. Woody was our guide and we had a wonderful experience! We are so grateful that we found Great Wall Hiking. We had traveled to China once before, and had visited the Great Wall, but this was by far a better tour and overall experience. We did a private tour for our family and Woody went out of his way to make it an enjoyable and educational experience for our children. The meal included was delicious. I can’t recommend them enough. We spent a few weeks traveling throughout China but this tour was the highlight of our trip.

Great Wall Trek! - Great trip with a friendly and knowledgable guide. The trip was a small group as described, of five people in total and we travelled a comfy minibus with an efficient driver who was also super friendly! We were taken to a non tourist entry point and the wall was really quiet and meant we could get some great pictures! It would have been nice to stop a little longer at certain points to take photos but we understand that we were on a tight timescale. We were taken to a local restaurant after the trek and served up several local dishes! Would definitely recommend this trip to anyone, we’re so glad we could tick this off our bucket list :)

Awesome Day - Gary the trip coordinator was very responsive, it helps if you have WeChat. Our tour guide Dewit was really knowledgeable about the area and his driver was very professional and got the hiking area and home very safely. I would definitely recommend using Gary and his team to hike the great wall.

Best way to experience the Great Wall - This is an incredible way to see the Great Wall. We were a small group, 7 people, plus the guide, Dewit. The tour was from 8 a.m. to about 6:00 p.m. including travel to and from Beijing. Very comfortable van ride and they provided water and snacks. The Wall itself was incredible, of course, and to be able to hike along the wall for 3 hours made the journey unforgettable. Dewit knew where to take good photos, and he also provided some nice history and information along the way. He also knew when to stop and take a break before or after some of the more intense stairs. It is a real hike - be prepared for lots of steps and tired muscles at the end. After the hike, we had a nice group lunch near the wall. The other people on the tour were delightful as well. Highly recommend it.
