Shankill Road - history of the area. We begin in 1690, when King William the 3rd arrived in Ireland to defeat King James the 2nd at the famous Battle Of The Boyne. There will then be an explanation about the recent troubles, which started in 1969 and ended when the peace agreement was signed in 1998.
You will be guided through the heart of Loyalist…
- Shankill Road - history of the area. We begin in 1690, when King William the 3rd arrived in Ireland to defeat King James the 2nd at the famous Battle Of The Boyne. There will then be an explanation about the recent troubles, which started in 1969 and ended when the peace agreement was signed in 1998.
You will be guided through the heart of Loyalist walk around the area, where your guide will explain the loyalist wall murals and what they depict. You will have the opportunity to take your own photographs of the loyalalist murals.
- Peace Wall - The peace walls were designed to separate the Catholic (Republicans) and Protestant (Loyalist) populations. The first ‘peace lines’ were erected, following the outbreak of War also known as the 1969 “The Troubles”.
They were built as temporary structures, meant to last only six months. Due to their effective nature they were built higher, longer and made permanent. Today, the walls are adorned with art and messages of hope from tourists.
- Falls Road - Visit the famous Falls road the birth place of the Provisional IRA was formed. Each section of this road and its political mural will be explained in detail and the reasons it exists.
The next stop is the Sinn Fein press office, which is the site of the the most famous mural in the world Bobby Sands mural. You will hear about the history of the Irish hunger strike in H Blocks Prison in 1981.

So happy - Our driver was tremendous and our tour was educational and not rushed. Our driver was so considerate and let us take numerous photos and gave a thorough history of the area.

Excellent Tour - This is highly recommended. Brendan was our driver and tour guide and I have to say he was excellent. His approach was to find out what we were interested in and made suggestions on where to take us. Nothing was too much trouble and gave us a great narrative of the troubles in NI. His knowledge was excellent and answered all our questions with ease. Highly recommended and was the highlight of my trip to Belfast. He picked us up from our hotel and then dropped us off outside Crumlin Road Gaol which is also recommended.

Black Taxi tour a must! - Just a few moments out of lovely Belfast city Center, you enter the stark separation between Irish Catholic and British Protestant neighborhoods, with memorials to those two perished in the violence prominently displayed in public spaces and next to homes, including countless innocents. It was a somber history lesson for us, but deeply profound and enlightening. Our driver Brendan was passionate yet very professional, and radiated positivity about learning from the mistakes of very recent unnecessary violence. The “peace walls“ with gates that close nightly was dramatic for us being from the US, especially considering this area was not safe to visit not long ago. Highly recommend; definitely worth it!

Black Cab Taxi Tour - Brendan was an excellent tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and able to answer all our questions! We enjoyed hearing the perspective of someone who lived and grew up in the area. Thank you Brendan!!!

Above and beyond our expectations! - Ricky was phenomenal! He guided us through a fabulous and informative tour through Belfast. I appreciated his incredible knowledge of the history of the area. He explained Irish history, giving us a better understanding of the Troubles. We were given an up close, sometimes uniquely personal glimpse into what life was like during this time. Ricky lived through this, and it made the experience that much more insightful. We learned so much and he made our trip so much more memorable. I highly recommend Ricky and this incredible tour. Thank you!

An eye opening ride with Jim and his black taxi - We had a wonderful experience with Jim. He was not only very knowledgeable and shared that wealth of knowledge freely, but he was able to tailor the taxi experience to our specific interests and lack of knowledge of the specific points of view of both the Protestant and Catholic population. We came away with a new knowledge of why these two populations had so much animosity toward each other.

Not enjoyable - I was expecting more time in the taxi seeing different sites but we only spent 5 to 10 minutes in the taxi and the rest of the time standing out in the freezing cold. The guide was very knowledgeable but I didn’t enjoy it.
