- Kalemegdan Park and Belgrade Fortress - The journey begins with a convenient pick-up from your hotel or accommodation in Belgrade. The first destination is Kalemegdan, the city’s oldest and largest park, along with the stunning Belgrade Fortress. Starting at Leopold’s Gate, the tour will explore the remnants of the Roman castrum, Singidunum, and the medieval walls built upon it, including Zindan Gate, Despot’s Gate, and Jakšića Tower, all from the 15th century. Visitors will explore two Orthodox churches within the fortress: The Chapel of St Petka and Ružica Church (Virgin Mary Church). In the Upper Town (Gornji grad), the breathtaking view of the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers awaits.
- Pobednik - The tour continues through the Upper Town, featuring the Victor monument by the renowned sculptor Ivan Meštrovic, a Belgrade landmark, the Roman well, the King’s gate, and the Sava promenade, along with the Damat Ali Pasha Tomb, Clock Gate, and Clock Tower. Passing by the Military Museum and through Istanbul’s gate, the tour exits the fortress and re-enters Kalemegdan Park. Here, the Monument of Gratitude to France by Ivan Meštrovic and numerous busts of famous Serbian literary figures can be found. The tour then resumes in the vehicle.
- Novi Belgrade - The tour proceeds to showcase New Belgrade’s impressive modern architecture. Developed post-WWII during the socialist era, it features remarkable buildings such as the Ex-Central Committee of the Communist Party, the Federal Executive Council (Palace of Federation), Genex Tower (Western Gate of Belgrade), and Sava Center, one of the largest congress halls in Europe. New Belgrade’s architecture was even highlighted in a special exhibition by New York’s MOMA museum titled “Toward a Concrete Utopia.” This area reveals a different side of the city, with buildings reflecting the former Eastern bloc’s “brutalist” style and modern business structures. The tour passes by the “Novak” restaurant, owned by tennis star Novak Đoković’s family, and the Belgrade Arena, a key sports venue in Europe.
- Zemun - After New Belgrade, the tour reaches Zemun, a northern Belgrade area known for its Central European charm, quaint quarters, cobblestone streets, and riverside fish restaurants. The tour passes Avijatičarski Trg, marking the start of old Zemun, with a WWII heroes monument, Zemun’s oldest elementary school, and the Air Force Ministry, a prime example of pre-war Yugoslav modernism. The ride continues along Gospodska Street, showcasing Zemun architecture like the Post Office, Hotel Central, Town Museum, and the House with a Sundial.
- Zemun - The tour then leaves the vehicle for a walking tour through old Zemun, along the Danube River’s Zemun Promenade, home to historic fish restaurants shaded by century-old plane trees. The tour passes the 17th-century Orthodox church of St. Nicholas and ascends Gardos Hill, the heart of Old Zemun, with its winding cobblestone streets and small houses, blending Mediterranean and Middle European cultures.
- The Millenary Monument - At the hilltop, the remains of the Zemun citadel and the Millennium Tower, Zemun’s central landmark, are visible. This romantic structure, built in a mix of historical styles in the late 19th century, marked the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s southernmost point. The tower offers a breathtaking view of Zemun Old Town, the river confluence, and the Belgrade Fortress.
- Zemun - Descending Gardos Hill, the tour reaches the Main City Square, surrounded by historic buildings like the Bishop’s Office and the 18th-century Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin. The walking tour concludes here, allowing free time for lunch, coffee, or exploring Zemun’s streets. Dining options include riverside restaurants serving fresh Danube fish, the local pastry “burek,” or “chevapchici,” seasoned ground meat rolls.
- Dedinje - Crossing the Gazela Bridge, the tour heads to Dedinje, Belgrade’s most luxurious residential area, featuring beautiful mansions amidst the greenery of Topčider Hill. The guide shares intriguing stories about the properties’ history during the turbulent 20th century. The tour visits “Rajko Mitić Stadium,” home to Red Star Belgrade, the last Eastern or Southern European club to win the Champions League. Nearby is Partizan Belgrade’s stadium, highlighting a rivalry over 70 years old.
- St. Sava Temple - From Dedinje, the tour visits Vračar to see the Church of St. Sava, one of the world’s largest Orthodox churches. The Temple of St. Sava, with its massive dome visible citywide, is an impressive structure. Construction began in the 1930s on the site where Ottoman forces burned St. Sava’s relics. St. Sava, the Serbian Orthodox Church’s founder and first archbishop, is a key figure in Serbian history. The church, in Serbian-Byzantine style, covers 3,500 m² at ground level, with 1,500 m² in three galleries. The dome reaches 70 meters, with a 12-meter central gilded cross, totaling 82 meters in height.
- Trg Slavija - After visiting the Temple, the tour re-enters the vehicle, passing through Slavija Square to Nemanjina Street, home to state governmental institutions like the Government Building, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, General Staff of the Serbian Army, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Finance, and State Court, all showcasing Belgrade’s pre-war architecture.
- Trg Republike - The tour continues to Republic Square, the capital’s heart, hosting prestigious cultural institutions. Here, the guide shares insights on key buildings like the National Museum and National Theatre, and explains Prince Mihailo’s significance in Serbia’s modern history. The square features the National Museum, National Theater and Opera buildings, and an equestrian monument to 19th-century ruler Knez Mihajlo.
- Terazije Fountain - The tour reaches Terazije Square, known for its 19th-century white stone fountain and the Moskva Hotel, one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. Passing Nikola Pasic Square, with a monument to Yugoslavia’s first Prime Minister, the tour stops at the Parliament Building.
- The National Assembly - This spot is ideal for photos, showcasing the Old and New Royal Palaces and stories of the two dynasties that ruled Serbia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The tour concludes here, with the guide offering suggestions for the rest of the afternoon.
