Highlights
  • Trg Republike - This walking tour portrays the most contradictory era of Serbia covering the period from World War II to 2000-s. Our story can be started with a „once upon a time”, nodding to the fairytalelike mentality of the generations born and raised during this period and the nostalgia for the golden years led by the towering figure of Josip Broz Tito. Conspiracy theories and urban legends from the 2nd half of the 20th century will take you through the rise and reign of Communism in Yugoslavia.

You will meet our guide, your comrade at the place where the Communist Yugoslavia had been conceived. Republic Square is the place where Tito’s inspiring speech as an overture for the proclamation of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia happened.

All along the route of the tour, you’ll see socialistic grey edifices belonging to the constructivism era mixed with numerous monuments from the era of the Yugoslavian Kingdom and the last couple of decades.

  • Terazije - Terazije Square will tell you stories about glamorous holidays and festivities, and you will learn about world-known celebrities and untypical guests in Hotel Moskva.

The former square of Marx and Engels with the high-and-mighty Trade Union Hall will tell you how the cult of work was the ideal of Yugoslavian society and how one miner became a superstar.

  • Пионирски парк - At the Pioneer’s Park, the ritual of the pioneer oath will be the theme, as well as how the socialist regime was the most liberal of all countries within this system.

Allowing the influence of the West in music, a change of lifestyle was created. Each good story needs to have dark parts, so in this one, we will share it with you without censure.

On your way, you will see the monument of Ivo Andrić, a Nobel Prized Serbian writer and a Serbian ambassador in Berlin at the beginning of World War II.

Afterward, as we would like to provide you with the full experience of the 50-year-long historical period of former Yugoslavia, you will catch a trolley, a symbol of public transportation back then, which is still active.

It will bring you to the elite district of Belgrade called Dedinje, famous for numerous embassies and residential villas, but also the complex of the Museum of Yugoslavia.

  • Museum of Yugoslavia - It is devoted to the life and deeds of Josip Broz Tito, the famous communist leader revered as an outstanding man who led the country to a bright future.

In the museum, you will see a stunning collection of ceremonial presents given to the Yugoslavian President, one of the most valued being a gift from the crew of Apollo 11.

At the end of the tour, you will be introduced to the mausoleum known as the House of Flowers where leader Tito is buried. Thanks, both to the great collection and storytelling, here we will revive the last days of the Former Republic of Yugoslavia.

Hopefully, we will bring you back safely to reality from the time when life was tailored by the size of the ordinary man.

Additional Information

Our comrade and guide will accompany you on a guided walk that reveals the complex era of Serbia from World War II to the 2000s.

The mysteries and tales of urban folklore from the latter half of the 20th century will guide you through the inception and rule of Communism in Yugoslavia. The locations visited will reveal how Communist Yugoslavia was fashioned, the reasons for the compulsory pioneer oath, regulations around the life of an average Yugoslav, and much more.

The iconic public transit vehicle, the trolley, will transport you to the Museum of Yugoslavia, a place dedicated to the life and contributions of Josip Broz Tito. Tito’s life stories will make you see him as a public figure, and somehow instill a feeling of reverence for him at the House of Flowers, his burial site.

Personal Insights Into the Real History of Yugoslavia - My husband and I booked this tour, expecting to learn about the Communist era in the former Yugoslavia and the legacy of Josip Broz Tito...and while we did learn a lot about those topics, we walked away with a priceless experience, so much more. This tour allowed us to gain a much greater understanding of Serbian history, it's culture and the passion and strength of its people. We discussed many topics over the course of this tour, including the transition of the republic to the socialist government as we walked around key locations in the Belgrade City Center. By approaching these discussions with an open mind, we walked away with a much greater understanding of the complex history and current political structure of the Balkan countries. Nebojsa was a fantastic tour guide who went out of his way to engage every individual on the tour, and to talk with each of us about our own individual questions. He was gracious, professional and polite to every person on the tour, and I felt we had a much greater understanding of the amazing Serbian experience, history and culture after our morning with him. While our conversation with Nebojsa and his companion guide were the highlights of the tour, I do have to make a special call-out of our trip to the Museum of Yugoslavia that ended the tour. This was such a special experience: the Museum was a little bit further out, and not a place where we would probably have gone on our own; but our guides took us on a trolley ride to the site, and then walked us through the entire facility, including Tito's grave. Every part of the museum was fascinating, and definitely not something that anyone who is serious about understanding the complex Yugoslavian history should miss.

Nice immersion in Yugoslavian history and culture - The tour, lasting almost 5 hours, was very exhaustive, interesting and not at all boring. While walking through Belgrade, moments of learning about history alternated with those about culture and the guide's personal experiences! Finally, a guided tour with entrance ticket included, to the Yugoslavian museum, truly interesting!

A brilliant tour. - A brilliant tour. My guide Jelena was very well-informed, articulate and full of interesting stories. She really brought the subject to life with her energy and intelligence and by the end I felt I'd learnt a huge amount and understood a lot more about a complicated and fascinating subject. Highly recommended. C

100% recommend - Very well thought out tour, our guide Borjan was very informative and was able to give stories from his own personal experience. He was very engaging and was very careful in making sure we understood the events taking place. Definitely have a much better understanding of this time and how it impacted the citizens of Yugoslavia.

A Must-Do Tour When Visiting Belgrade - First, I want to say that the tour operator really deserves praise for how they handled me being the only person on a group tour. Rather than just canceling the tour, they sent a message and offered me a different tour and a bit of a refund or an option to pay a small surcharge to remain on this tour. This is the tour I wanted, and for what became a private tour this was still a great value. My guide, Nebo, was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Having already been to most of the stops before on my own during previous trips to Belgrade, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I still learned from him. I would highly recommend this tour!
