Your adventure commences from Caye Caulker island, where you have the option of traveling by San Pedro Belize Express ferry or Maya Island Air. Our guides will be expecting you upon your arrival in Belize City on the mainland. An air-conditioned 90-minute drive later, you will reach the ranger depot. There, you will be outfitted with a helmet, headlamp, and life jacket if required. Then it’s time to embark on a journey through the sacrificial Mayan underworld of the ATM, involving hiking, wading, and swimming. You’ll traverse 3 river crossings and take a 30-minute hike, leading you to an hourglass-shaped entrance. The cave system extends near 3 miles and is filled with stalactites, stalagmites, imposing boulders, and streams of fresh water ranging from ankle to waist deep. You’ll culminate with the main vault where the ‘Crystal Maiden’ dwells, speculated to be the crystalized skeletal remains of a young girl offered in a blood sacrifice to the ‘gods’.
