  • Xunantunich - In the western part of Belize, near the border with Guatemala, is Xunantunich, or “Maiden of the Rock”. It is a Classic Maya archaeological site dating from 200-900 CE. This strategic location allowed traders to control trade along this important river, as well as through the adjacent valley. This is situated on a high ridge overlooking the Mopan River.

Xunantunich is set within a tropical forest preserve with a compact core center. The site’s total area is estimated to be about 3 square miles/7 square kilometers, but the core area can easily be visited. You can reach the site by driving to San Ignacio on the Western Highway from Belize City or Orange Walk. San Jose Sucozt is about eight miles away from San Ignacio. To reach the site, a hand-operated cable ferry crosses the river.

This archaeological site representative of Classic Maya dates back to 200 - 900 AD. Its prime location facilitated the control of trade routes along this significant river and the encompassing valley. The site majesticallly sits atop a ridge, providing panoramic views of the Mopan River.

Nestled in a lush rainforest preserve, Xunantunich has a densely packed center. The site spans approximately 3 square miles/7 square kilometers in total area, with its main section easily accessible for visits. Traveling from Belize City to reach Xunantunich involves a drive along the Western Highway to San Ignacio. A journey across the river awaits you on a manually operated cable ferry to get you to the site.

The cacao farm is situated 3 miles west from San Ignacio. Here, one can understand the challenges that cacao farmers confront in San Ignacio through firsthand experience. The Mayans were the pioneers of chocolate making. A visit promises the unique experience of observing traditional stone grinding in progress.
