Set within Belize’s Cayo District, across Benque Viejo Road near San Jose Succotz, lies Xunantunich, just a few miles from the Guatemalan border on the west of Belize. The journey to the site involves crossing the Mopan River via a manual ferry at San Jose Succotz. From the river’s far side, it’s a mile upwards to the ruins which can be reached either on foot or by vehicle.
Known as the “Maiden of the Rock”, Xunantunich is the second highest Mayan ruin in Belize. The site’s biggest pyramid, El Castillo, towers at 130 feet over the main square and provides a breathtaking panoramic vista of the Cayo District, Guatemala, and the Mopan River. The ruins have been extensively excavated and features an informative educational museum onsite.
