Mystical Mornings in the Heart of Belize
Belmopan, the charming capital of Belize, offers a unique blend of adventure and history, perfect for those rainy days when the skies are overcast, and the air is thick with the promise of rain. As the sun rises at 6:26 AM, the day begins with a sense of mystery and excitement, ideal for exploring the hidden wonders of this lush region.
Start your day with a journey to the Xunantunich Ruins & Cave Tubing adventure. Available from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, this tour takes you deep into the heart of Mayan history. The Xunantunich Maya Ruins, known as the “Maiden of the Rock,” stand tall amidst the verdant landscape, offering breathtaking views of the Cayo District and beyond. As you wander through the ancient courtyards and temples, you’ll feel the echoes of the past reverberating through the air. A recent review from 2024-11-13 captures the essence of this experience:
Fantastic Tour Provider and Guides - Get To Know Belize Adventures! - We would highly recommend Get To Know Belize Adventures (GTKBA). Josie is so nice and really treated us like family. We were not sure about meeting the minimum group size of 4 with other touring company that was closer to us in Placentia, GTKBA has a minimum of 2! Shane, our driver was awesome and very knowledgeable and we leaned so much about the different areas of Belize we traveled through on our way to the Xunantunich Maya Ruins & Cave Tubing at St. Herman’s Cave. It’s about a 2.5 hour drive and some of the roads are pretty rough and it was nice to just sit back and enjoy the ride and scenery! Xunantunich is a must see and being able to go all the way to the top was incredible with amazing views!! The water level was a little higher on the cave tubing and was not able to do the full length but it was another experience we would recommend. We also booked a half day snorkeling trip to the Belize Barrier Reef with GTKBA and had a great time with our guides, Medz and Jeff. The 40 minute boat ride to the reef was refreshing along and educational. We learned things we did not know about the 400 mile long reef, the thriving habitatof coral and marine life. GTKBA fulfilled the 3 main reasons for our visit to Belize and will definitely book more tours with them on our next trip!
After soaking in the history, indulge in a delicious Belizean lunch before heading to St. Herman’s Cave for an exhilarating cave tubing experience. As you float through the river cave system, the rain outside becomes a distant memory, replaced by the thrill of adventure and the beauty of the underground world.
Afternoon Adventures in the Underworld
As the afternoon rolls in, the rain may persist, but that doesn’t mean the adventure has to stop. Head over to the Crystal Cave & Blue Hole exploration, available on January 5th from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This physically demanding tour is not for the faint-hearted, but the rewards are well worth the effort.
Embark on a 50-minute hike through the tropical forest, where the rain adds a mystical touch to the lush surroundings. Once you reach the cave entrance, prepare to rappel 15 feet into the vast chambers of Crystal Cave. Here, you’ll uncover the secrets of the Maya underworld, Xibalba, as you navigate through shimmering formations and ancient artifacts. A review from 2023-12-23 highlights the unforgettable nature of this tour:
Incredible adventure! Go all the way to Wonderland! - My 60 year old father and I did the Crystal Caves tour with guides Marcos and Jose. What an incredible journey! I suspected it was going to be challenging but I still underestimated the amount of physical prowess needed! That being said, I never felt unsafe and it was great to get down and dirty and feel challenged (ATM felt like a Disneyland kid ride compared to this). We were 1 of 2 groups down in the cave so it felt very private, in contrast to ATM where we were shoulder to shoulder waiting in line at some bottlenecks. At some point our group split in 2, 1 turned back and 1 continued on to Wonderland, based on skill/ability to descend into the harder to access parts of the cave. I am infinitely grateful to Jose who led us down to Wonderland and shared his intimate love of caving and ‘extreme adventure’ with us along the way. My experience would not have been complete without making the descent to Wonderland! Jose was so kind and patient and exuded passion for caving and rescue. My father thinks this tour should come with a more robust warning about the physical ability required to reach Wonderland- I think if you’re just slightly above average physical fitness level, you would be fine, but it takes mental fortitude as well! And even if you’re an exceptional rock climber, still expect to be covered in mud by the end-there are tight spaces you have to slide through. Bring 3-4L of water per person, and plenty of snacks too. I highly recommend (if you are physically able) to ask your guide to take you to wonderland- they may not if you do not specifically request. They may even say ‘no’ if your group is too slow! But the experience overall was unforgettable and I encourage everyone to request Jose for this tour!
After the cave exploration, take a refreshing dip in the Blue Hole, a jungle-bound cenote that offers a cool respite from the day’s adventures. The rain may continue to fall, but the experience of swimming in this natural wonder is nothing short of magical.
