Shri Chennakeshava Swami Temple Beluru - The extraordinary Channakeshava temple of Belur was built in the 12th CE by Vishnuvardhana who was the greatest king of the Hoysala dynasty. The Hoysala dynasty ruled from 10th to 14th Century AD. They were largely contemporary of Cholas of Tamil Nadu. Vishnuvardhana built the Belur temple to commemorate two things - victory over the Chola king as well as conversion from Jainism to Vaishnavism.
From Belur, it takes about 2 hours of drive to arrive at Shravanabelagola. -
Hoysaleswara Temple - The Hoysaleshwara & Shantaleshwara temple of Halebid was constructed during the Hoysala reign in 12th CE. This temple was built by Ketumalla the Army General under King Vishnuvardhana. This is a Shaivaite temple built in typical Hoysala architecture where the principal material of construction is the Blue Chlorite Schist and the plan of construction is star-shaped. This temple can be considered as the Magnum Opus of the Hoysala architecture There are more than 20000 statues, big and small in this temple complex! It has taken 3 generations to build this temple but the temple was never completed 100%. Halebid, literally meaning “old town” was the first capital of Hoysalas but moved to Belur in the 12th CE.
It takes a four hour drive from Bangalore to reach Halebid and then about 45 minutes to visit it. From Halebid, Belur is half an hour drive. -
Shravanabelagola - Shravanabelagola, literally meaning ‘the white pond of the jain monk’, houses the tallest monolithic statue in the World. It was carved out by a monolithic block of stop atop the Vindhyagiri in 983 AD by Chavundaraya, a Jain follower of the region. Sharavanabelogola is the most important Jain pilgrimage centre in South India.
Bangalore is about 3 hours drive from Shravanabelagola. - Shravanabelgola Jain Temple - From Shravanabelagola, we drive to Bangalore. We can stop by for toilet or for a snack/early dinner break. There are a number of eating options on the highway to Bangalore.
