- Victor Hasselblad Sea Turtle Research & Conservation Center - VICTOR HASSELBLAD SEA TURTLE RESEARCH & CONSERVATION CENTRE. This is Sri Lanka’s oldest turtle conservation and research project, initiated by the renowned camera manufacturer, Victor Hasselblad, during a time when all seven sea turtle species were endangered. Of these, five species frequent the southern coast of Sri Lanka to lay their eggs. The center collects and hatches the eggs, allowing the hatchlings to grow before releasing them back into the wild. Over the years, nearly four million turtle hatchlings have been released into the sea. Visitors can see turtles ranging from one day old to 30 years old, including injured turtles that cannot be released. Knowledgeable staff are available to discuss their vital work. The on-site gift shop offers a variety of items, with proceeds supporting the center’s efforts to release more turtles.
- Galle - GALLE COLONIAL FORT. The 16th-century Dutch fort in the Bay of Galle was initially built in 1588 by the Portuguese and later extensively fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century from 1649 onwards. Stroll through the quiet streets, admire the 17th-century architecture, and explore the fortified walls, capturing photos beneath the lighthouse.
This historical, archaeological, and architectural heritage monument has maintained its polished appearance for over 423 years, thanks to extensive restoration by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka.
The fort boasts a vibrant history and today hosts a multi-ethnic and multi-religious community. The Sri Lankan government and many Dutch property owners within the fort are working towards making it a modern wonder of the world.
The fort’s heritage value is recognized by UNESCO, inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria iv, for its unique display of “an urban ensemble illustrating the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries.” The Galle Fort, also known as the Dutch Fort or the “Ramparts of Galle,” withstood the Boxing Day tsunami that damaged parts of coastal Galle town. It has since been restored.
