[ sightseeing boat ] Fee: ¥1500 (approximately 10 USD) per adult
The “Oboke and Koboke Gorges” were formed by the swift currents of the Yoshino River cutting through the Shikoku Mountains over 200 million years. These eight-kilometer-long gorges boast a stunning landscape resembling towering marble sculptures. There are two theories about the origin of their unusual names: they may derive from the archaic word “Hoki/Hoke,” meaning a cliff, or from the phrase “dangerous (危) to walk (歩) long (大) stride” (Oboke, 大歩危) and “dangerous (危) to walk (歩) short (小) steps, too” (Koboke, 小歩危). The Oboke Gorge features beautiful rock formations and a V-shaped valley, offering a close-up view of the geological formation of the Japanese archipelago. It is a valuable site and has been designated a national monument.

The Matsudaira Clan, relatives of the Tokugawa Shogun, controlled Takamatsu’s former castle town and surrounding area, then known as the Sanuki Province, during most of the Edo Period.

The Seto Inland Sea is an inland sea dotted with many small islands. Because it is an inland sea, it is calm with almost no waves. We recommend a day trip to Shodoshima, an island in the Seto Inland Sea.
Shodoshima is the second-largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, with a population of 28,500 and an area of 170 km2 (as of April 1, 2017). The island is known as the Mediterranean of Japan, both for its year-round temperate climate and as the birthplace of olive production in the country. Traditional food production, such as soy sauce slowly fermented in wooden barrels or sun-dried somen noodles, continues to thrive after 400 years. Cuisine using these time-tested methods is found in abundance.
