Although its last eruption in 1881, geothermal activity in the form of steam vents and hot springs remains high on and around the volcano. The vents produce crystalline sulfur, which was mined on a small scale in the past. Seepage of sulfurous gases has also caused acidic discolouration of the small crater lake.
- Sipiso Piso Waterfall - One of the tallest Waterfall in Indonesia, it has 120 meter high and it located in Tongging Village, 45 Kilometers from Berastagi at the Northern end of Lake Toba.

Day on the mountain - Hendra was a 10/10 tour guide. The experience was seamless, from pickup at Medan and the tour for the day on the mountain, then the hotsprigngs, then the waterfall, amazing. Would definetly recommend again to any of my friends.
Also, once we arrived to the summit, it was very cloudy. Whilst most other groups went down straight away, hendra was kind enough to wait in hopes that the weather would clear up. To which it finally did, and really made the whole experience. big ups Hendra!

The best day trip from Medan - It’s hard to sum up how smooth sailing and enjoyable this experience was: the Berastagi team was incredibly organised, energetic and knowledgable. We were picked up at 2am in Medan by our awesome and patient driver Rizki, and managed to sleep easily on the drive to the starting point. Hendra was our guide for this tour, and we had such a fun time. He’s passionate, funny and knowledgable with the route, we’re happy we managed to catch him on his first tour back since he returned from Aus! We spent a long time at the different peaks admiring the surroundings, having some tea and coffee even convincing him to make some tiktok dances. Once we made our descent we were treated to a natural hot springs visit, perfect for the muscles. We also visited a local coffee shop (Biji Hitam Coffee Shop) and the Sipiso Piso waterfalls. I could not recommend the team enough 💪🏼 Definitely a must do booking a great guide to get the most out of the experience (and to have a safe adventure!) Terima kasih to the team 🙏🏼

A day away from Medan - I am very happy that I had a very skillful and safe driver. The roads conditions were very challenging and it was raining. His name is Risky but I felt very safe , no risk at all.
Konong my guide that brought me up to the summit was very knowledgeable about the areas in Indonesia and even history of Indonesia. I enjoyed his company and he even made me an espresso on the summit that made my trip a memorable one.
The sulphur hot spring was fantastic and therapeutic . I bought the sweetest passion fruit at the fruit market . I strongly recommend this tour to whoever comes to Medan for a holiday, definitely worth it !

Definitely recommend - It was really nice trip and highly recommended. It's not difficult to climb the mountain, but it's a good to bring proper hiking boots, a raincoat, warm clothes, and other hiking gear.
Also, It was windy and the weather was changeable, but it was a beautiful sunrise.
The espresso that my tour guide Konong made for me on the mountain was great.
The sulfur springs after descending the mountain helped to soothe my fatigue, Sipiso Piso Waterfall was impressive, and Lake Toba was calm; everything was just perfect.
I am really grateful to my guide Konong and driver Risky for having such a fun time.

Highly recommended - THANK YOU FOR THE MOST MEMORABLE NEW YEAR TRIP!
The reviews does not lie. I was assigned Kono for the hiking tour and Risky as the designated driver. Both are really professional at what they do. Kono has extensive knowledge about the mountains around the area as well as around Sumatra. He will brew coffee for you while waiting for the sunrise. Additionally, he's a photographer (good for social media people)
Similarly, Risky is knowledgeable about north Sumatra, recommending you to good street food and teaching me how to lookout for non-halal stall. He's also good at cracking jokes which made the entire trip enjoyable.
Both guides are able to communicate in English.
Tip for the hike: Wear proper shoes with proper traction, trails can get slippery. Also, might be challenging for those non-active as the inclines are quite steep. But nonetheless, it is not super challenging. Also, rest well since you will be up at 2am to depart Berastagi. The trip to the waterfall is quite long as well. So rest up, it's gonna be a long day.
Also bring swimsuit, you get to swim at the hot springs after the sunrise hike.

A great experience - We loved every second of this tour. Our guide Angi was from the area and impressed us with his knowledge. We learned a lot about Berastagi, the volcano and the jungle during the tour. It was one of the greatest experiences on Sumatra and every cent we spent was worth it: Nature is untouched, it is not crowded and the tour supports local tourism. If one day our paths lead again to Sumatra, we will do this tour again. Also our driver Rio was super warm and picked us up punctually at 2am from Medan. Please book this tour, the guys are in a good mood and super warm. You will be rewarded with a breathtaking view from the Sibayak at the end.

Serious and great agency! - I recommend 100% the agency Berastagi adventure which was very good advice! During our stay in Berastagi we climbed the Sibayac volcano. We were guided by Anggi who was perfect! Very nice, speaks very good English and taught us a lot. Then we ended with the hot springs. It was very nice.
