Highlights
  • Vulcanii Noroiosi (Muddy Volcanoes) - The Berca Mud Volcanoes (Romanian: Noroioși de la Pâclele Mici) is a geological and botanical reservation located in Scorțoasa commune close to Berca in Buzău County in Romania. Its most spectacular feature is the mud volcanoes, small volcano-shaped structures typically a few metres high caused by the eruption of mud and natural gases.

As the gases erupt from 3000 metres deep towards the surface, through the underground layers of clay and water, they push up underground salty water and mud, so that they overflow through the mouths of the volcanoes, while the gas emerges as bubbles. The mud dries off at the surface, creating a relatively solid conical structure resembling a real volcano. The mud expelled by them is cold, as it comes from inside the Earth’s continental crust layers, and not from the mantle.

The reservation is unique in Romania. Elsewhere in Europe, similar phenomena can be observed in Italy (northern Apennines and Sicily), Ukraine , Russia as well as Azerbaijan.

  • Slanic Salt Museum - Known as the biggest salt mine in Europe, Slanic Prahova stands today for one of the most important watering and climatic resorts in Romania, situated between the valley of Prahova and that of Teleajen, at about 44 km of Ploiesti, at 400 meters of altitude.
Muntele de Sare (The Salt Mountain), unique in the entire world, Grota Miresei (The Bride’s Cave), Baia Baciului (The Shepherd’s Lake), Baia Verde (The Green Lake) and Salina Unirea (Unirea Salt Mine) are just some of the resort’s attractions, which, according to the documents, for more than 300 years represented an important salt extraction center.

Another memorable tour - Unfortunately due to weather and time constraints, we were unable to go to the muddy volcanoes, but Nicolas made sure we had a wonderful tour regardless and found an alternative option for us at a local winery. We arrived at the Salt Mine early in the day and had most of it to ourselves the majority of the morning. What an amazing experience - driving through tunnels to get to the mine, and spending time 14 stories underground - it was definitely a unique experience. The time at our next stop was also enchanting - a small, local winery where we enjoyed a tour and wine tasting with a very knowledgeable local hostess. This was followed by lunch at another winery - of course with Romanian donuts for dessert. It was a very entertaining and enjoyable day.

A trip that won’t easily be forgotten - Our second day with Nicolas! The Salt mine was like nothing we had experienced before. We got there prior to other groups so we basically had the place to ourself. It’s a unique and peaceful experience for sure. Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate so the muddy volcanos weren’t an option for our second stop due to the weather. Nicolas was quick to come up with another plan, and he arranged for a visit to an enchanting Romanian winery. We had a great tour and wine tasting with their guide. We then had a delicious lunch at another winery. The afternoon was only topped when I said I wanted to drive a local horse/buggy. Nicolas was kind enough to stop a gentleman that we passed and arranged for a ride. Such a fun experience and I have the pictures to prove it!
