- Bergen - Our tour begins in Bergen, known as the Gateway to the Fjords. Founded in 1070, the city boasts numerous historical and cultural landmarks. We’ll pass by some of these on our way out and upon our return to Bergen.
- Osteroy Municipality - Sørfjorden, or the South fjord, is part of the Osterfjord, a unique natural phenomenon: a saltwater inlet surrounding Northern Europe’s largest inland island, Osterøy Island, enclosed by mainland. We drive along the South fjord until we reach the crossroads in Trengereid. (We usually do not stop here.)
- Trengereid rundkøyring - From the village of Trengereid, we take Route #7 to the Hardangerfjord. (We usually do not stop here.)
- Hardangervegen - Hardangervegen, or the Hardanger Road, is Norwegian route #7. This road is a tourist attraction in itself, offering stunning views of mountains, lakes, and waterfalls. On our way to the Hardangerfjord, we’ll make two photo stops at waterfalls: Fossen Bratte and Steinsdalsfossen.
- Fossen Bratte - We stop at Fossen Bratte waterfall, which stands 259 feet (79 meters) tall. The view is spectacular, and you can take memorable photos here. A short walk to the base of the waterfall is highly recommended to experience the refreshing mist and pure water droplets on your face.
- Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall - Our next stop is at Steinsdalsfossen waterfall, which is 164 feet (50 meters) tall. You can walk behind the falling water without getting wet. A walk behind the waterfall to the viewpoint is highly recommended.
- Hardanger - The Hardangerfjord is Norway’s second-longest fjord. We will travel along the fjord to Granvin, cross it on the Hardanger bridge, and continue our journey to Eidfjord.
- Skårsvatnet - After passing through the charming small towns of Norheimsund and Øystese, we take a short detour to the Goldfish Lake, Skårsvatnet, a special lake with a large population of golden orfe. The fish are tame and can often be seen close to the shore.
- Fyksesund Bridge - After visiting the Goldfish Lake, we continue to Fyksesundet, a narrow fjord, which we cross on the Fyksesund suspension bridge, built in 1937.
- Steinstø Fruktgard - On the other side of Fyksesundet lies Steinstø, a small farming community with Steinstø fruit farm, fruit kiosk, and café. We can stop here for a cup of coffee, a piece of apple pie, and a view of the fjord.
- Hardanger Fjord - We continue our journey along the fjord, enjoying the natural beauty of the scenery and the quaint villages scattered along the coast.
- Hardanger Bridge - Eventually, we reach one of the narrower parts of the Hardangerfjord. Here, we cross the fjord on the Hardanger Bridge, a suspension bridge from 2013 with a main span of 1310 meters (4300 feet). This impressive structure is preceded by an 8 km (5 miles) long tunnel, with another tunnel on the other side. We stop at the viewpoint overlooking the fjord and the bridge.
- Norsk Natursenter - Hardanger - After passing the village of Eidfjord, a popular cruise ship destination, we drive to Øvre Eidfjord to visit the “Norwegian Nature Center – Hardanger,” a museum and visitor center of the Hardangervidda National Park. The center is dedicated to the region’s flora, fauna, geology, and history. You can also watch a beautiful film on 5 screens (Supervideograph system) by Norwegian-Italian director Ivo Caprino, showcasing the magnificent sights of the Hardangervidda plateau. After the museum, there will be time for lunch at a cozy yet spacious café.
- Vøringfossen - Our next stop, and the main destination of the journey, is Vøringsfossen waterfall, standing 182 meters (597 feet) tall, located at the end of Måbødalen valley where the Hardangervidda begins. The viewpoint consists of several secure platforms overhanging the waterfall and the canyon. The view is mesmerizing, with raging waters falling to the canyon’s bottom, a rugged valley with a stream meandering below, surrounded by a lush yet fragile tundra landscape.
If time permits, we may continue further up into the Hardangervidda plateau above the timberline, where the landscape changes to a bare mountain landscape surrounded by rock and lichen.
After visiting Vøringsfossen waterfall, and possibly a short ride up the Hardangervidda plateau, we return to Bergen. The road takes us back to the Hardangerfjord, across the bridge, and through the town of Voss. The tour concludes in Bergen.
- Skjervsfossen Waterfall - On our way back to Bergen, we take a short detour on an alternate road and stop at another waterfall, Skjervsfossen, with its twin falls plunging from a height of 150 meters.
