• Bergenhus Fortress - Bergenhus Fortress, positioned at Bergen harbor’s entrance, is one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved stone fortifications. Its structures date back to the 1240s, with later additions, including those from World War II. In medieval times, this site, then known as Holmen, housed Bergen’s royal residence, cathedral, churches, the bishop’s residence, and a Dominican monastery. Archaeological excavations have uncovered foundations predating 1100, possibly from King Olav Kyrre’s era. Bergen was Norway’s capital until 1299, with Holmen serving as the primary seat of power. Stone walls encircled the area in the 1240s. Håkon’s Hall, constructed between 1247 and 1261 by King Håkon Håkonsson, was Bergen’s largest and most imposing royal residence during the 13th century. This hall, now 750 years old, hosted significant national events, including the drafting of Norway’s first comprehensive set of laws, and notably, the 1261 wedding of Magnus Håkonsson Lagabøte to Danish princess Ingeborg.
