Additional Information

The erstwhile Sachsenhausen concentration camp, was one of the first camps constructed with the express intent of terrorizing, persecuting, torturing, and murdering those the Nazis deemed racially, politically, or socially inferior. As you journey to this notorious camp, you’ll pass through the nearby town of Oranienburg - a settlement which benefited from its proximity to the camp. Your experienced, licensed guide will escort you around the past prison and punishment cells, infirmaries, living quarters, gas chamber, and crematorium. You’ll hear inspiring tales of defiance and unity amongst the prisoners in almost impossible circumstances. The tour will also take you to the Inspectorate of Camps, a seemingly ordinary building where the Nazis orchestrated their pan-European concentration camp operations.

For each ticket that we sell, we contribute €2 to maintaining and further restoring the previous concentration camp.

Excellent tour of the closest concentration camp to Berlin - This was a very good tour. Our guide Mikey was very knowledgeable. It's a dark part of history but important to remember and learn from. It's possible to do this site on your own, but having a guide explain everything makes really enriches the experience -- and also made it easy to navigate the train ride there. Make sure to fill up with a big breakfast because it's a fairly long day with no lunch break. We were encouraged to bring a snack, but it needs to be something you can easily eat while walking because there is no place to stop and eat. Likewise, bring water.

Sachsenhausen Memorial Tour from Berlin - My eldest child recommended going to Sachsenhausen with a guide, as she had done the same thing. I'm so glad I did. It was good to be part of a group. Lewis, the guide, worked hard to give us context for each part and time to reflect on our own then meet back. We were a large group of 27+ people but it didn't feel like it. Lewis gave everyone time to ask questions, it was a very respectful and moving experience. We did the tour near the end of the week and made sure we had a big breakfast before setting off to the meeting point. We travelled together on the train and walked through the town to the camp. I was aware that we could have gone on our own but the experience was much richer to have been guided through it.

Surreal Experience - The most memorable moment from the tour was viewing the barracks where the people would sleep in such small bunk beds.

Sad but interesting - This was a sombre trip, but one which I felt I should do, to try and understand the scale of what happened in Nazi concentration camps. Our guide, Georgia, was extremely personable, informative and respectful throughout the tour. It was really interesting, but clearly also quite saddening too. Highly recommend this trip.

Exceptional tour - Exceptional tour. Our guide, George, was a wealth of knowledge on this tour and passionate about the subject. He was very inclusive and always knew where his group was. My partner has a knee problem ( there is a reasonable amount of walking) and George made sure he was ok. A very poignant and thought provoking tour. Couldn't recommend more highly.

Sachsenhausen 6/3/2024 - If you’re in Berlin, this is a must. Pete F was our tour guide, he was really friendly and informative. He was always equipped to answer any questions the group had and you could see his passion for history and helping people shine through every time. The tour itself is heavy on the heart. You’ll see most of the things you’ve read about but they carry more weight when they’re right in front of you. There are barracks with lots of items like the Star of David that Jewish people were forced to wear, and the uniforms they gave to the prisoners. So much to read and learn. All in all it was the best part of my trip to Berlin. I’d recommend bringing a backpack with some snacks and water to have on or between the trains as you’ll be there for around 5 hours.

Top excursion - A very special educational excursion with our top guide Gregor. Highly recommended if you are staying in Berlin. With the necessary humor in between, except in the concentration camp of course.

Thought provoking! - It was a long day in a large group (which we were not expecting). We did a walking tour of Berlin the day before which we thought was better. However, going to Sachsenhausen is definitely worth a visit. It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like for the people there. It’s worth going to the Topography of Terror in Berlin to see photos taken when people were in Sachsenhausen & there is more interpretation available.

Do Not Take Notes - If you want a tour where you are allowed to take notes, then this is not the tour for you. I write notes to process information, connect what I've taken pictures of, and remember what I've learned when I go home. Our guide called me out, in front of everyone, and asked if I was taking notes. I said yes, thinking this was something he would appreciate, since I was actively engaged, smiling along, and listening. He told me to stop taking notes, that if I wanted to take notes, I should buy a book from the gift shop, and said that I made him uncomfortable. I felt embarrassed in front of the whole group, it ruined the whole excursion, and it soured the remainder of our trip in remembering and recalling this experience. Instead of this tour, I wish that I had bought the audio tour at the memorial, because then I would have been able to take notes and would have been spared any embarrassment.
