Additional Information

The erstwhile Sachsenhausen concentration camp, was one of the first camps constructed with the express intent of terrorizing, persecuting, torturing, and murdering those the Nazis deemed racially, politically, or socially inferior. As you journey to this notorious camp, you’ll pass through the nearby town of Oranienburg - a settlement which benefited from its proximity to the camp. Your experienced, licensed guide will escort you around the past prison and punishment cells, infirmaries, living quarters, gas chamber, and crematorium. You’ll hear inspiring tales of defiance and unity amongst the prisoners in almost impossible circumstances. The tour will also take you to the Inspectorate of Camps, a seemingly ordinary building where the Nazis orchestrated their pan-European concentration camp operations.

For each ticket that we sell, we contribute €2 to maintaining and further restoring the previous concentration camp.

Sad but interesting - This was a sombre trip, but one which I felt I should do, to try and understand the scale of what happened in Nazi concentration camps. Our guide, Georgia, was extremely personable, informative and respectful throughout the tour. It was really interesting, but clearly also quite saddening too. Highly recommend this trip.

Exceptional tour - Exceptional tour. Our guide, George, was a wealth of knowledge on this tour and passionate about the subject. He was very inclusive and always knew where his group was. My partner has a knee problem ( there is a reasonable amount of walking) and George made sure he was ok. A very poignant and thought provoking tour. Couldn't recommend more highly.

Sachsenhausen 6/3/2024 - If you’re in Berlin, this is a must. Pete F was our tour guide, he was really friendly and informative. He was always equipped to answer any questions the group had and you could see his passion for history and helping people shine through every time. The tour itself is heavy on the heart. You’ll see most of the things you’ve read about but they carry more weight when they’re right in front of you. There are barracks with lots of items like the Star of David that Jewish people were forced to wear, and the uniforms they gave to the prisoners. So much to read and learn. All in all it was the best part of my trip to Berlin. I’d recommend bringing a backpack with some snacks and water to have on or between the trains as you’ll be there for around 5 hours.

Top excursion - A very special educational excursion with our top guide Gregor. Highly recommended if you are staying in Berlin. With the necessary humor in between, except in the concentration camp of course.

From start to finish, our guide, Campbell, proved to be an invaluable source of information, enhancing our experience. His historical context painted vivid pictures of the past, which made the atmosphere of the trip even more real. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit. Top tip, wear your walking boots!

Fantastic tour of a crucially important place - I went with teenage sons - Fantastic tour. There was a big group of people when we met at the starting point. Insider Tours had 3 guides available and we split into 3 groups of around 25. All guides seemed lovely. We had Xavier who was absolutely fantastic. He was very interesting and knowledgable - on the journey there he was funny and engaging and told us loads about German history before and after the war - answering all the questions from people in our group. Our group was pretty young. I’d been nervous about taking my 2 teenage sons - 15 & 18. I needn’t have worried. He kept them engaged and focused. When we got to the camp, Xavier gave brilliant information in a sensitive, thoughtful way. He took us around the whole camp at a really good pace so that we learnt loads but didn’t get too overwhelmed or lost momentum. I have lost family members in concentration camps and I felt Xavier was profoundly respectful and thoughtful in what he said. He didn’t know my family history when we were on the tour. The tour says 3 hours but that is the time spent in the camp. We left Berlin at 10am and returned around 4.15pm, with the train trip included. We took water and snacks, and ate our snacks after we left the camp. There are displays and small museum-type areas in parts of the camp. I’d wondered about just going ourselves, but I’m really glad we went with a quality guide. I think we got loads more out of the day and were able to see and understand a lot more in the time we had. 3 hours was a good amount of time to see and learn a lot but not get beyond the point that we could not take it in anymore.

Highly recommendable experience - The tour to the concentration camp in Sachsenhausen was a very good experience in the sense of getting to learn so much more about that part of German history. Our Tour guide was Walid who did an amazing job at passing his knowledge on. He knows very well how to deal with the sensitive topics of the history and guides everyone through with the appropriate level of respect. I‘d highly recommend taking this tour.

A tour not easily forgotten.. - I was scrolling through the reviews to see if I could spot our Bangladesh-UK guide's name, but I could not. I'm sorry for forgetting too many names when passing a few countries in a short number of days. Irish travel, so it was comforting to see our guide was familiar to home and you could get some bants out of him. I felt the communication was thought out thoroughly, and it helped me envision how events could have likely occurred. Still, also importantly, I will add that he knew how to pull you out - as there were severe times a depressed feeling would settle in amongst the group, no surprise the location. Thanks a lot and the very best wishes. Also, I will close with this statement, which I think needs answering - indeed, what is the purpose of a memorial like this when we look around us in Europe and the world in 2023?
